1. OBJECTIVE
The objective of this report is to define the calculation for the engineering analysis and
design of temporary tie-in sheet pile structure as a retaining system at MLL103 station to
allow safe tie-in activity during the shutdown window.
The calculation covers load estimation and member capacity check with due references to
the relevant codes and standards.
2. PROJECT OVERVIEW
PGB intends to replace existing NPS 36 PGU-I Gas Pipeline with new NPS 36 PGU-I Gas
Pipeline (namely GRAPHITE) due to ageing facilities. New PGU-I Gas Pipeline will use better
route, eliminating hilly and graphitic soil via Loop 1 Right-Of-Way (ROW).
The PROJECT adapts like-to-like replacement including the pipe size of NPS 36, with length
of approximately 33 km from Gas Processing Kerteh (GPK) until Bukit Anak Dara Kijal,
Kemaman, Terengganu. The scope consists of Engineering, Procurement, Construction and
Commissioning (EPCC) of the FACILITIES.
In general, the new gas pipeline will be installed alongside the existing NPS 36 Loop 1 Gas,
NPS 12 Liquid Propane pipeline and two (2) x NPS 8 Liquid Butane pipeline. The ROW
varies from 90m then reduces to 40m width. Generally, the ROW corridor traverse along
light population village areas, railway & road crossings, palm & rubber estates, and hilly &
undulating terrains. In overall, FACILITIES for GRAPHITE project as illustrated below:

5. SYSTEM OF UNITS
The International System Unit is adopted as the main system of unit throughout the
engineering design, in accordance with the requirements of PTS 16.00.01.
The stability and integrity checks and analysis are performed in accordance with the
following listed guidelines and standards:
R evision: 0
7. DESIGN INFORMATION
For geotechnical finite element (FE) analysis, computer software "PLAXIS" is used to
simulate the permanent sheet pile deflection and induced bending moment during
excavation. PLAXIS is a FE software program, specifically developed for the analysis of
deformation and stability in geotechnical engineering problems.
The sheet pile (FSP III) used as permanent retaining system for excavation works. FSP
III sheet pile is a common type of sheet pile available in the market. The material
properties for sheet pile listed below:
7.3 Loading
Condition with 60kN point load at 1.Sm away from sheet pile is being analysed (based on
lm width and distribute to 3m length in the analyses)

Two (2) nos of boreholes, namely BH MLL103 & BH MLL 103a where field logs are attached
in Appendix 2.
Table 1 presents the subsoil profile for BH MLL103 & BH MLL 103a plotted with SPT'N'
value versus depth. The SPT'N' values are increasing with depth. Hard layer with SPT'N'
greater than 50 is at depth of about 13.5m to 16.5m below ground level.
Revision: 0
The subsoil profile as extrapolated from the soil investigation boreholes. Table 2 shows
the effective soil strength and stiffness parameters adopted in geotechnical finite element
analysis for both roadwork upgrading, motorcycle lane and bridge crossing. The Hardening
Soil (HS) model was used to describe the stress-strain behaviour of soils.
The bending stiffness (EI) and axial stiffness (EA) of sheet pile wall (FSP III) utilized in the
Plaxis analysis show in Table 3. The steel Young's Modulus used is 205 kN/m 2•
EI
Type EA (kN/m)
(kNm 2/m)
FSP IIIA 3.813x106 4.674x104
Finite Element Method was used to analyse the interaction between the soil and the
excavation sequnce.
The circumstances were analysed using 2D plane strain condition. In the typical FE
mesh, the left and right boundaries were assumed to be fixed horizontally but free to
move vertically, whereas the bottom boundary was assumed to be fixed in both
directions.
Revision: 0
It is to note that the Plaxis analyses captured the analyses on main structural element
which is temporary steel shee piles where steel plates used at the pipe elbow area are
additional prescriptive measures to ease the construction works.
In this analysis, ground model extent of 40m with and 25m has been adopted.
The envisaged construction sequences for the impact assessment according to the
typical cross section presented in Figure 2 shall be as below:
1. Imposed 60kN at 1.5m from sheet pile (assume load spreading of 3m)
2. Install 9m length Sheet Pile (FSP IIIA).
3. Excavate to 2mbgl
4. Install struts and excavate to 4mbgl (Final Excavation Level).
5. Factor of Safety (Required 1.4).
Result from 2D analyses are presented in terms of induced bending moments, sheet pile
deflection due to excavation work at the proposed site were obtained from FE analysis.
The results of Finite Element analysis are presented in Appendix 3.
R evision: 0
The factor of safety obtained from plaxis is 1.4 which is adequate for the sheet pile
stability.
10. CONCLUSION
The predicted permanent sheet pile wall deflection and induced bending moment due to
the effect of excavation are found to be well within the acceptable limit and based on the
available information, hence, the proposed temporay sheet pile wall is adequate.
