Pedagogy Planning
Activity
1. The first step to this lesson is that the teacher will introduce the topic
to the students by using PowerPoint. They will go over what each food
group is, how much of each is needed for a balanced meal, what foods
most often cause food allergies, and what our balanced plate looks like
in America.
2. Next, students will compete a short matching worksheet. On this
worksheet there will be different amounts such as 1 ½ cups, or 2 ½
cups, there will also be every food group written out. Students will
match how much of each food group is needed to each food group
example. This will be based on the daily recommended amount for
third graders. (The teacher will go over this information during the
PowerPoint so it shouldn’t be too difficult for the students.)
3. The last activity for the day the students will be able to create their
own balanced plate. They will use the website Pick Your Plate.
Students will start by completing the United States of America medal.
During this activity students will be given different food options that
they want to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They will also be able
to see how each food will add to each category, such as dairy, grains,
fruits, vegetables, protein, and it even has a salt, sweets, and butter
calculator they have to keep their eye on when making choices on
what they eat. Students will be graded by if they can stay in the green
check mark category for every different food group. For example, the
one that I competed and put in this lesson plan, I received a green
check mark in every food group, except I ate too much butter. After
the students compete their balanced plate and receive a green check
for every category, the students will raise their hand and the teacher
will come over and check and give them a grade. If a student cannot
get all the green checks in each category by the end of class, whatever
their highest number of green checkmarks they have gotten will be
their grade. If a student finishes early they are allowed to explore

other countries food groups, and balanced plates, however this will
not be graded.

Mobile App 1. Pick your plate does not currently have an app on smartphones,
Option however it does allow you to use their website on your smartphone.
2. The closest alternative that I found on the app store is called My Daily
Plate. This app still allows students to log their meals for a day,
however it is not as animated and fun for younger students. This app
also doesn’t allow students to explore other countries plates.
