SUMMARY

Figure 1: MAF- unit

De MAF-unit is a membrane filtration circuit of type MBR (membrane Bio Reactor). It is constructed
for India to test different membranes. The maximum membranes the test bench can contain is 3.
Therefore, 3 modules will control and measure the membranes. One module consists of a pressure
sensor, a flowmeter, a peristaltic pump (rotates right and left). This module is connected to a
membrane frame.

Mefias®-software is used for the process control, it is communicating with the compactFieldPoint-
modules van National Instruments in the electro-box.

1.3. EXPLANATION

The airflow under the membranes, is supplied in order to keep the membranes clean at the
outside, a continuous airflow of about 0,3 Nm³/h per aeration tube must be applied on the flow
indicators FI-1 and FI-2.

The algae reactor should be filled with the necessary quantity of algae influent. The level of the
algae reactor tank is controlled by the position of the level sensor (LT-1). The algae influent is
added by means of influent pump P-4. The flow rate of pump P-4 can be varied manually by turning
the potentiometer knob on the controller of pump P-4. Influent is added when the liquid level of
the reactor is below the level sensor. A delay time is implemented in order to prevent pulsation of
pump P-4. When the high level is not reached within 2 minutes, the installation stops working (this
will probably be due to lack of influent).

The flow of the permeates, caused by the permeate pumps P-1, P-2 and P-3, is measured by means
of the flow meter FIT-1, FIT-2 and FIT-3. This measurement is used to calculate the actual flux
through the membrane. Under-pressure in the permeate pipes are measured by means of the
pressure transmitters PIT-1, PIT-2 and PIT-3. These results are used for the calculation of the TMP
(transmembrane pressure).

CHAPTER 1 General Overview

In the algae reactor, 1 to 3 membrane IPC plates are applied. If a plate is removed, the hose should
be shut off and the plate should be replaced by a dummy plate. The purpose of this dummy plate is
to lead the air bubbles along the other membranes in order to clean them. Best is to keep the
middle plate and to replace one or both of the outer plates by a dummy depending on the
application.

The normal working procedure is for the benchmark Kubota filtration during 4 minutes and 1
minute relaxation and for the IPC membranes filtration during 4 minutes and backwash during 20
seconds (0.33 minutes) at 150 % filtration flux1 minute and 1 minute relaxation. During the
backwash phase, permeate water is sent back to the membranes, which helps to keep the
membranes clean. Therefore one must be careful that the ends of the permeate lines after the
permeate pumps are always immersed in the permeate liquid.

2.2.3. INSTALLATION THE IPC MEMBRANES

The installation should always be used with 3 membranes as the positioning over the aeration
tubes is very important.
If it is hard to get the tubing over the column, just heat the tubing with heated air. The
polyurethane tubing has an internal diameter of 5,5mm and an external diameter of 8mm. Keep
the IPC membranes together while entering the reactor chamber (see Figure 6). It is very important
that the membranes are exactly positioned on the middle of the aeration zone.

2.2.4. START THE INFLUENT

Make sure the emergency stop is pulled out. Put the main switch on the left side of the electrical
cabinet in position I.

Fill the bioreactor with algae influent. The membranes must be completely immersed in the liquid.
Connect a compressed air supply to the inlet of the pressure switch PS-1. Regulate the pressure on
the pressure regulators R-1 and R-2 until the pressure is about 2 bar. Open the valves V-1 and V-2
until the flow indicators FI-1 and FI-2 indicate a flow of about 0,3 Nm³/h.

Place 3 permeate collection tanks. Make sure that the end of the permeate lines after the
permeate pumps are always at the bottom of the permeate collection tanks in order to avoid air
going through the lines during a backwash.
At the first start, in order to evacuate the air in all the permeate lines, one should slowly fill all the
permeate lines with water. This can best be done by selecting the program ‘deaeration’ in the tab
‘Prog’, as well as in the tabs ‘Pr. 2’ and Pr. 3’. The way to do this is explained in chapter 3.
After pressing the button, the 3 pumps will start at a low speed (10 %), and the
permeate lines will slowly fill up with water. When all the lines are filled, press the
button.

CHAPTER 3 MEFIAS®-SOFTWARE

3.1. SOFTWARE

Start up the Mefias®-software by clicking on the icon on the desktop or by selecting

C:\MefiasMAF\MefiasMAF v2.00.exe in Windows Explorer.
The software starts up with the last used module data and program. Everything which has no dark
green background on the screen is continuously displayed (whatever TAB is selected). The TAB
“Prog” should be active on . At
fill in the name of the operator(s). At fill in the users password. This password should be
“strt” (without the quotation marks) for daily use. This is the operator level. There is no possibility
of changing the procedures or other data in this level. Only already made procedures can be loaded
in the program. After pushing the enter-button, the button appears. At the right
hand corner push the load-button (see Figure 8) and select the appropriate program if it is not the
last used program. The applied procedures should appear in the program lines (see Figure 9). A
procedure can be added by pushing the button next to the appropriate program line and an
already made program can by implemented as subroutine with the button. If a program line
has to be deleted, use the button at the left of the considered line.

The module data for the used membranes must be loaded (see Figure 10) from which the flux can
be calculated as well as the safety parameters to protect the membrane. The desired sample
interval in seconds can be changed if needed .

The Program line data must not be loaded.

Click on the button to run the program. A filename is created automatically which
contains following information (see Figure 12):
 201X_XX_XX : yyyy_MM_dd (the start date);
 -xx : a prefix name which can be filled in in the tab ‘Control’;
 _XX(c) : the xth run on the start-up-day and (c) for the next days.
As an example one can get such a filename:

At the start-up date and time are mentioned and left of it is positioned the
actual time.

Figure 10: Module data with 3 membrane plates

Since in the algae reactor 3 membranes can be inserted which can be operated separately, every
membrane must be registered as a separate module in the module data. As a result, 3 different
programs can run simultaneously. These programs must be selected via the tabs
. Both on the tab ‘Pr. 2’ as on the tab ‘Pr.3’ the module button must be switched
in the ‘On’-position if you want to work with the 3 membranes.

Figure 11: Module button

Fill out the name of the membranes that will be tested. This will be logged in the files. The first
module needs to be a Kubota membrane. Module 2 and 3 need a IPC membrane.
Fill out the surfaces in m² ; it is very important to calculate the TMP and the flux. The surfaces of
the membranes that are shipped with this installation are given in figure 12.

3.2. STEADY-STATE REGIME

3.2.1. THE PROGRAM SEQUENCES

When running, one can follow the actual state of the sequences in the Prog-, Pr.2- and Pr.3-TAB. In
Figure 12 the red dot on the left indicates that this is the actual
running line of the program. In the field PROGRAM LINE DATA all data of the actual line are
displayed. On the lower half of the figure it can be seen that the remaining time of the filtration is
6min10sec on a total filtration time of 8 minutes. The total amount of effluent till now has been
0.035 litres. The sample interval is 10 seconds. The permeate pump P-1 is running at 55.5% of its
maximum capacity. The flux is set at 20.00 l/hm² and the pump P-1is running forward (radio button
P1F is green).

Figure 12: Program in steady-state regime

In Figure 9 and Figure 12 it can be seen that there is one procedure line for the filtration, one
procedure line for the backwash and one procedure line for the relaxation. For the 2 other
membranes, the working procedure on the tabs ‘Pr.2’ and ‘Pr.3’ are similar as for the first
membrane on the ‘Prog’ tab.

3.2.2. PARAMETER FOLLOW-UP

The visualisation of the parameters can be followed in the TAB Graphs (see Figure 13). Here, the
sample interval is 10 seconds and the actual number of samples taken is 230.

Figure 13: Visualisation of selected parameters

The selected parameters like are displayed on the graph. Selecting or deselecting a
parameter can be performed with a mouse click on the button.

The auto-scale of the X-axis and the Y-axis can be set by selecting the appropriate button
. Here, the values and the time are automatically scaled. If auto-scaling of the values
(sc.Y) is not set, there might be a risk that not all values appear on the screen. It should therefore
only be deselected to zoom in for the evaluation of a parameter. To do so, the minimum or
maximum value of the Y-axis must be selected with the mouse and the needed value must be
entered. Afterwards the appropriate button should be set back on auto-scaling.

The actual value of the parameters TMP, MTC @ 20°C and effluent flow (production) are
continuously displayed at the bottom of the screen for the 3 membranes:
. The following premise is made: since the permeate
pump sucks the liquid through the membrane plate, the TMP (and also the MTC) is negative. The
positive value is used in case the pump would push through the membrane. At start-up, the
negative value might be positive.

Figure 15: P&ID

In the P&ID-TAB (see Figure 15) it can be seen which components are activated (=coloured) and all
parameters (also the non-selected in the Graphs-TAB) are continuously monitored.

3.2.4. ALARM LOGGING

In the Alarms-TAB an not only an overview of the logged alarms (e.g. no air pressure, no flow,…) is
presented, but also other actions like e.g. when high level sensor LS01 has been reached, the
program has been stopped manually, …

3.2.5. PROGRAMMING LEVEL

The password “ctrl” must be used to enter the programming level. As can be seen, two TABs are
added namely TAB “Proc” (procedure) and TAB” Prog list”.

 Procedure programming (TAB “Proc”)

Warning: This level should be used with caution. By bad programming, parts of the
MAF-unit can be destroyed. After finishing changes to the procedure and program,
enter password “strt” to put Mefias® back in operator mode and to avoid accidental
changes of parameter settings.

While being online, a procedure can be adapted or made from scratch. For instance the flux can be
adapted, the filtration or relaxation time can be altered… Best is not to change other things.

Example for changing the flux:

If you would like to change the flux from 14 l/m²·h to 20 l/m²·h, push the load button
and select the appropriate procedure. Alter the Flux value next to 14.00 into 20.00

CHAPTER 3 Mefias®-software

. Push the save button and keep the same name (overwrite the previous
version).

Example for changing the filtration time:

If you would like to change the filtration time from 8.00 min to 6.00 min, push the load button
and select the appropriate procedure. Alter the Time value
into 6.00. Give a new procedure name if necessary and push the save
button as described above. The values after the decimal dot are decimals and not sexagesimals
(e.g.: 0.50 min = 30 s)!

Example for changing the relaxation time:

If you would like to change the relaxation time from 2.00 min to 1.00 min, push the load button
and select the appropriate procedure. Alter the Time value
into 1.00. Give a new procedure name and push the save button as
described above. The values after the decimal dot are decimals and not sexagesimals (e.g.: 0.50
min = 30 s)!

Warning: Please do not alter other things, since correct functioning of the
installation cannot be guaranteed anymore.

If one has changed the procedure name, the newly made procedure can only be implemented into
the program when it has been stopped by . The procedure can be added by pushing
the button (see Figure 9) next to the appropriate program line. If a program line has to be
deleted, use the button at the left of the considered line. Finally, save the program, if necessary
under a different name.

 Program listing (TAB “Prog list”)

In this TAB an overview of the complete program is presented (see Figure 17).

By clicking the button, one can change between the programs of module 1, 2 and
3.

3.3. ENDING A TEST

Push the button to end the Mefias®-software.

3.4. OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAMS

For all the membranes there are 4 different programs available: ‘manual no alarm’, ‘deaeration’,
algae filtration’ and ‘Clear water test’
 Manual no alarm: this program is intended to use only when one wants to test something,
e.g. one of the pumps. All devices are controlled manually.
 Deaeration: this program has to be used at each start-up, when there is air in the permeate
lines.
 Algae filtration: this is the normal program for the filtration of algae. The initial flux of the
filtration is set to 20 l/hm². Depending on the stability of the filtration, the flux can be set
to a higher or lower value. Note that when one changes the filtration flux, the backwash
flux needs to be adapted as well since the backwash flux is 150 % of the filtration flux.
 Clean water test: this program is used to test the condition of the membranes before and
after an algae filtration. For every membrane, 5 cycles of filtration/relaxation (Kubota) or
filtration/backwash are performed. If the permeability of the membranes becomes too
low, the membranes need to be cleaned.

CHAPTER 4 troubleshooting

CHAPTER 4 TROUBLESHOOTING

4.1. INSTALLATION HAS HALTED

Check the alarm logging.

4.2. MEMBRANE BROKEN

When the permeate collection compartment contains algae or particles the membrane is broken. It
should be replaced by a new membrane. Before adding the new membrane the good membranes
should be removed and cleaned. The permeate pipes must be cleaned with detergent and eventual
obstructions (particles) must be removed.

4.3. NO PERMEATE

Possible causes for the permeate flow interruption are

 a broken membrane which causes an obstruction in the permeate pipe or flow-meter FT2.
Solution: see 4.2 Membrane broken;
 a defect permeate line, e.g. there is a gap in the tubing through one of the permeate pumps, or
a connection between 2 tubings has released.
Solution: replace the tubing, or make the connection again

4.4. TRANS MEMBRANE PRESSURE IS TOO HIGH

If the TMP (trans membrane pressure) is too high, there is a risk of damaging the membrane. The
membrane then has to be cleaned. Take out the membrane and clean it according to the
membrane data sheet.

CHAPTER 5 Safety

CHAPTER 5 SAFETY
