What’s New

Macramé Defined

Macramé is an art of tying knots in string to make decorative things. Try reading this
poem and see how it will be related to the lesson that will be introduced to you.

Macramé Poem

When she would macramé

I stayed and watched.
Taking her needles,
And attaching small knots.
Making crisp doilies….
With different patterns,
Little mats she would starch.
Amazing my curiosity,
At the speed she delivered such art.

When she would macramé,

I would ask her how it was done.
She took my hands in between hers…

Until I alone did start.

She noticed soon I got extremely bored,
And my grandmother made me stop.
Boy…
You something else.
Why you so nosy?
I ain’t nosy, grandma.
You got enough apples to make a pie today
I would ask.
And she would just shake her head
With nothing from her to me to say…
She would hum and continue doing,
Her fast paced macramé.

Motive Questions:
1. As a young adult, can you relate to the poem presented?
2. Why do we need to focus when we do something important?
3. How do you accept advice from your elders?

4
What is It

Macramé is a form of textile produced using knotting (rather than weaving or knitting)
techniques. Its items look beautiful, but often too complicated and hard to do. The design of
the most macramé works is made up from the different combinations of a few basic knots.
Few of them are:

Table 1.13. Basic Macramé Knots

A half knot is used in tying the

shoelace.

Procedure: Cross the two ends over

each other. Pass one end over and
then under the other to make the half
knot which takes the load (arrows) in
both ropes.

A square knot is two half knots in

opposite directions.

Procedure: Take two ropes and cross

them (red over blue) to form a half
knot. Cross them a second time ( red
over blue again) and pull the ends
tight to form the square knot.

A double half hitch has one string

Reversed double half hitch (right to the left) bearing the knot while the other string
wraps around it.

Procedure: Pass the end of a rope

around the object and tie an
overhand knot.

For the two-half hitches, repeat with

a second overhand knot in the same
direction.

Regular double half hitch (left to the

right)

5
An overhand knot is created with just
zone string where you make a loop
knot onto itself.

Procedure: Form a loop and pass the

end through it. Tighten it to form the
overhand knot. When pulled tight, it
can function as a simple stopper
knot.

Larks head knot is used to tie the

yarn mounted to its anchor or starting
cord.

Procedure: Pass the rope around the

object, back around itself, around the
object in the reverse direction, and
down beside it.

Flat knot (two half knots) consists of

Alternating Inside-out Butterfly two half knots: one to the left and one
Flat knots flat knots effect to the right. Four working cords are
normally used: two outer cords are
tied around two vertical cords.

General Directions: Provide an activity notebook wherein all your activities will be written
on it. Make sure to provide answers to all your activities for they will be
the basis for your grade. Good luck.

Sample on Basic Macramé Knotting

Setting-on knot. This is the most usual

method used to mount cords on a holding
cord, rod, or ring to start the project. In
this method, the cords are doubled and
the loose ends are pulled through the
loop end.

Flat knot. This consists of two half knots:

one to the left and one to the right.

Flat knot chain. Flat knots are tied in

succession around two holding cords.

Cording. This is composed of double half

hitches tied around a common holding
cord running horizontally or diagonally
left or right.

Alternating flat knots. Flat knots are tied

on alternating pairs of holding cords
produce this intricate pattern.

Half knot twist. Half knots are tied

repeatedly in the same direction produce
a twist or spiral.

Cord Preparation.

To avoid frayed ends of cords while working, you can do the following:
• Melted candle can be used to avoid unraveling cords.
• Apply glue to ends (but glue does not dry as fast as the melted candle).
• Attach a tape to ends.
• Tie the ends to form a knot.

Finishing technique is the final step of any macramé project. The term used to this final
stage is tie off. There are recommended finishing knots that can be used to tie off and these
are: overhand knot, square knot frame, barrel knot, and Matthew walker knot.
