Approximation
As we all know that ‘Approximation’ is the most widely asked topic in almost
every banking exam. It is actually the extension of Simplification.

In Approximation, examiner tests the calculation ability of aspirants by asking a

difficult mathematical expression (mostly in decimals and fractions).

In order to solve the Approximation expressions, we are not expected to calculate

the exact value but the value which is approximate or nearly equal to the given
expression.

While solving the Approximation question, we suppose to approximate the number

and then we simplify the expression.

In order to calculate value of Approximation expressions, the following rules will

be helpful.

Rule 1: If an expression contains numbers which are given in decimal form, then
the first thing we will do is to convert the number to its nearest integer.

Ex: ? = 9.98 × 12.05

Sol:

Change 9.98 to 10 (10 is its nearest integer)

And, 12.05 to 12 (12 is its nearest integer)

? = 10 × 12 = 120

Rule 2: Sometimes we need to round off the given numbers to nearest multiple
of divisor or required number. Most of the time numbers are given in such a way
that we can round off easily.

Ex: ? = 557 ÷ 15

Sol:

First, round off 557 to 555 (555 is the multiple of 15)

? = 555 ÷ 15 = 37

Ex: ? = 582.2 ÷ 13

Sol:

Change 582.2 to 585 (585 is the multiple of 13)

? = 585 ÷ 13 = 45

Rule 3: Sometimes, we round off the number not according to the expression but
according to the options, because looking at the options it seems that there is no
need to do more calculations.

Ex: ? = (445% of 532)  973

a) 4.5
b) 2.5
c) 11
d) 6
e) 8.5

Sol:

? = (445% of 532)  973

? = (4.45 × 532)  973

? = (4.45 × 532)  973

?  2.43  2.5

Alternative Method:

? = (445% of 532)  973 (If we will take 500 instead of 445 and 532 and 1000
instead of 973)

? = (500% of 500)  1000

?  (5 × 500)  1000 = 2.5

3.01 8.01 14.01 1

Ex: ? = 214.02 × 231.06 × 1410.02 + 7160

Sol:
3.01 8.01 14.01 1
?=2 ×2 × 14 +7
14.02 31.06 10.02 160
31 70 154 1
?= 14
× 31
× 10
+ 7160

? = 77 + 7

? = 84
