Introductory Message
Welcome to Farm School Science 8!

The Integrated Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative

efforts of the Schools Division of Guimaras and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Integrated Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional

materials aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace
and time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist
the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for
productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Farm School Science 8 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The Farm School Science 8 Activity Sheet is developed to help you

continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and
answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule.

Investigate the relationship of Newton’s Second Law of
Motion in performing land preparation

Name of Learner: .
Grade and Section: Date: .

I. Learning Competency with Code

Science 8 Investigate the relationship between the amount of force
applied to the mass of the object and the amount of
change in the object’s motion. (S8FE-Ia-15)

TLE 8 Perform land preparations according to prescribe

practice (cleaning, plowing and furrowing).
(TLE_AFOA9-120V-IIIa-j-IVaj-I)

Enhanced MELC: Investigate the relationship between the amount of

force applied and the mass of the object to the
amount of change in the object’s motion in
performing land preparation according to prescribe
practice.

II. Background Information for Learners

Have you watched what happens to a pile of leaves on a windy day? A light
breeze might gently scatter the leaves across the ground, but a huge gust of wind
would send the leaves whirling into the air. The forces acting on the leaves, for
example, is greater than zero, and its motion changes. Most of the motion we
observe in our surroundings undergoes change. This lesson focuses on changes in
motion-accelerated motion.
The principles behind Newton’s Second Law of Motion are very significant in
understanding the motion of object in our universe. Their applications are all
around us. Understanding these principle therefore helps us understand why
things around us move or behave or even perform works the way they do.
In our everyday activity we are applying the principles of Newton’s Laws of
motion even sometimes we don’t think about it. Performing land preparation in
our farm require basic knowledge in science like in choosing equipment to be
used in different activities like plowing, cleaning and furrowing the land before
planting. At the end of these lesson you are expected to use the different science
principle that will help you to be more effective and efficient in doing different
activities in preparing your farm before planting.

IV. Activity Proper

Activity 1: Force and Acceleration

What if the force applied on the object is changed while mass is kept
constant? Acceleration varies with the force applied on an object. To
increase the acceleration of an object, you must increase the net force acting
on it. If you double the net force on an object, its acceleration doubles . The
object's acceleration is directly proportional to the net force acting on it.

Materials:
Ball (preferably basketball or soccer ball if none is available you may make
an improvised one out of crumpled papers wrapped around with sticky tape)
Marker

Procedure:
1. In your home find an open space about 3-5 meters wide where you can perform
this activity. If available, you may choose to use a wider space outside your
house. (Note: Observe safety in performing this activity)
2. Put a mark on the floor to serve as your starting point.
3. Place the ball on the marked area and apply a slight kicking force to the ball
and observe its motion.
4. Repeat procedure no. 3, but this time double the kicking force you apply on the
ball, observe the balls motion.
5. Repeat procedure no. 3, but this time triple the kicking force you apply on the
ball.

2
Quarter 1 -Week 1

Guide questions:

1. What have you observed on the ball’s motion upon applying force?

2. Compare the motion of the ball when you apply a slight kicking force
and when you double and triple the amount of force applied?

3. How would you relate the ball’s acceleration to the amount of force
applied to it?
4. Based on the activity, what conclusions can you make about the
relationship of the applied force and the acceleration of an object?
Justify your answer.

Activity 2: Mass and Acceleration

What if the mass of the object is changed and the force is kept
constant? Acceleration also varies with the mass of the object. As the mass
of the object increases, with the same amount of force applied, its
acceleration decreases. The same force applied to twice the mass produces
half the acceleration; for three times the mass, one-third the acceleration.
We say that, for a given force, the acceleration produced is inversely

proportional to the mass.

Materials:
Two cart with different mass
Marker

3
Quarter 1 -Week 1

Procedure:
1. Place the two cart in the same starting line.
2. With the same amount of force push the cart as far as you can. Do
this in three trials.

Guide Questions:

1. What have you observed with the motion of the cart as you push
with the same amount of force?

2. How would you relate the acceleration of the cart to their masses
given the equal amount of force applied?

3. After you performed this activity, what can you conclude about the
relationship between the mass and the object’s acceleration? Justify
your answer.

Note:
Use separate sheet of paper for your answer sheet.

Newton's second law states

The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force
acting on the object, is in the direction of the net force, and is inversely
proportional to the mass of the object.

Acceleration a is directly proportional to the overall net force F and

inversely proportional to the mass m. By this we mean that, if F increases, a
increases by the same factor (if F doubles, a doubles); but if m increases, a
decreases by the same factor (if m doubles, a is cut in half).

Using consistent units, such as newton (N) for force, kilograms (kg) for
mass, and meters per second squared (m/s 2) for acceleration, the
proportionality is expressed as an exact equation:

In its briefest form, where a is acceleration, Fnet is net force, and m is

mass, it becomes

Remember, an object is accelerated in the direction of the force acting on it.

Figure 1: Plowing using a Tractor

A 1000 kg tractor is used in flowing the land. If a 4500N of force is

applied by the tractor to land while plowing, what will be its acceleration?
Given:
F = 4500N
m= 1000kg
Find: a = ?
Solution:
F = ma, so a = F/m
a = 4500N/1000kg = 4500kg.m/s2 = 4.5m/s2

Sample Problem 2

Figure 2: Plowing using an Animal

Photo Taken by: Mike Tyurin at pexels.com

An 80kg boy doing land preparation using the traditional plow with a
mass of 20kg. If 5N forward force is applied to the plow, what will be its
acceleration?

Given: m = 80kg + 20kg = 100kg

F net = 2N, forward
Find: Acceleration (a)
Solution:
F = ma so, a = F/m
a = 5N/100kg = 0.05kg.m/s2/kg = 0.05m/s2

2. Traditional ways in preparing land such as using animal or simple

machine exert a lesser force and do works in a low rate became
inefficient while modern ways that use engine do work efficiently and
faster rate make them efficient.
3. As s farmer I will used modern way in doing land preparation
because it more efficient and fast since it uses machine with a greater
force input and it can do work faster.
