03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Oil flow to valve mechanism

The oil flows from tappets to the cylinder head through a
connection on the side of the cylinder head. Inside of the
cylinder head oil flows through bore continuing up
through the internal channels in the rocker arms
arrangement. Lubricating oil lubricates the yoke pins and
further on also the valve rotators.
The rocker arm supplies oil only when it is in the “open
valve” position. When the rocker arm is in "valve closed"
position, the surface between rocker arm and the shaft is
lubricated.
The oil flow for the injection valve cooling is arranged via
cylinder head bores to the valve body where oil flows to
the nozzle end and then returns to top of the cylinder
head.
The lubricating oil is returned via the push rod covering
pipe through the valve tappets assemblies and back to
the oil sump as a free flow.

Pre-lubricating oil pump

The pump is of gear-type with two gears, driving and
driven gear powered by an electric motor. The pump is
also provided with an adjustable pressure control valve.
Pre-lubricating oil pump fills the engine lubricating oil
system before starting, e.g. when the engine has been
out of operation for a long time. It also provides
continuous pre-lubrication of a stopped engine through
which fuel oil is circulating and continuous pre-lubrication

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Pre-lubricating oil pump

Pressure regulating valve
The pressure regulating valve is integrated in the pre-lubricating
oil pump housing and it regulates the oil pressure before the
engine by returning the surplus oil directly from the pressure side
of the pump to the suction side.
This pressure actuates the regulating piston and the spring is
tensioned to balance this force at the required pressure. By
tensioning the spring by the screw a higher oil pressure is
obtained. The pressure shall be limited to the recommended
operation value by unscrewing the adjusting screw to the end
position in order to prevent the electric motor from being
overloaded when running with very cold oil.

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Pressure regulating valve

The lubricating oil system is equipped with a pressure regulating valve
to maintain the oil at a constant pressure to the engine lubrication oil
system under variable conditions. The pressure regulating valve is
designed for the maximum lubricating oil flow of the pump.
When pressure exceeds the adjusted values on the pressure
side, the valve piston moves and the lubricating oil circulates
into suction side of the pump housing. The opening pressure
is adjusted by compressing the valve spring with the adjusting
screw at the factory.
For engines running at varying speeds, the valve is arranged
to maintain a speed depending pressure, according to the
operating pressures recommended at various speeds. If the
pressure increases strongly in the pressure pipe the ball will
open and admit oil to pass to the regulating piston. This
serves as a safety valve operation.

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Running-in filter
All engines are provided with full-flow filters. The
filters are used only during running-in and at the first
start-up of the installation.
The oil flows through the filter and dirt particles are
collected to filter insert. A safety valve is built into the
middle of the lower end flange. This safety valve
opens if the pressure rises too much and allows the
oil to pass through.
It is recommended to use running-in filters after
certain maintenance operations, such as major
engine repairs and oil system maintenance or repair.
The filters are removed by the installation personnel.

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Automatic back-flushing filter

The automatic filter is installed on the lubricating oil
module. The purpose of the automatic filter is to
protect the bearings, journals and shafts in the
engine from possible impurities in the lubricating oil.
Filter construction includes separate safety valves,
which open at a specified pressure difference
between the inlet and outlet aggregates of the
lubricating oil module. The filter pressure differential
alarm is actuated by the engine control system.
The filter works with permanent back-flushing using
its own process fluid. No external power is required
to operate the automatic filter.

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Automatic back-flushing filter

Filtration phase
The medium to be filtered is conveyed via the inlet
flange and turbine (07) to the bottom of the filter
cartridges (01), and a partial flow of approx. 50 %
is conveyed via the middle connecting pipe (02) to
the top of the filter cartridges (01). This means that
the medium flows through the filter cartridges (01)
at both ends, from inside to outside, and the larger
particles of dirt are thus kept back inside the filter
cartridges (01).
The filtered medium is now conveyed via the
safety filter (05) to the filter outlet.

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Automatic back-flushing filter

Back-flushing phase
The flow energy drives the turbine (07) installed in
the inlet flange.
The high speed of the turbine (07) is reduced via
the worm gear (10) and toothed gear (09) to the
lower speed required to turn the tap (08).
The individual filter cartridges (01) are now
gradually connected to the atmosphere via the
continuously rotating flushing mechanism.

Fig. name: Automatic back-flushing filter, back-flushing phase

34 © Wärtsilä 2 July 2008 W3203L00BTM08B Rev. 01

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Automatic back-flushing filter

Back-flushing phase
While one of the tap (08) is in back-flushing position,

1. the other end of the filter cartridges to be flushed is blanked off,

so that all of the back-flushed liquid flows through the filter mesh in
the reverse flow direction.

2. the flushing opening of the other tap during the back-flushing should
be prevented if possible.

NOTE!
Counter-current back-flushing:
Due to the lower pressure inside the filter cartridges (01) during the back-flushing (connected to the
atmosphere) and the greater pressure (operating pressure) outside the filter cartridges (01), a counter-
current occurs through the mesh from the clean side of the filter via the dirty side of the filter to the
atmosphere.

NOTE!
The resulting pressure difference (operating pressure to the atmosphere) results in particularly
effective cleaning.

Operation mode of the overflow valves

If for some reason the filter cartridges (01) (first filter

level) are no longer cleaned adequately, the overflow
valves (11) are opened from 2 bar differential
pressure and the medium is filtered via the safety
filter (05) (second filter level).

36 © Wärtsilä 2 July 2008 W3203L00BTM08B Rev. 01

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Automatic back-flushing filter

Operation mode of the overflow valves

Before the overflow valves starts to operate, a differential pressure signal (first contact) is given via the
attached differential pressure indicator. The cause must now be localized and eliminated.
If this signal is not observed, an alarm is switched via the second contact of the differential pressure
indicator.

CAUTION!
The filter must only be operated in this mode (open overflow valves and differential pressure signal) for a
short period of time in an emergency situation. Prolonged operation in this mode can result in damage to
components switched downstream.

NOTE!
The overflow valves are closed in normal operating conditions, including in start-up status with lower medium
temperatures.

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Centrifugal filter
The centrifugal filter acts as a complement to the automatic filter and it is
located at the rear side of engine. The filter cleans the dirty automatic
filter back-flush oil by centrifuging it.
The filter comprises a housing containing a hardened steel spindle on
which a dynamically balanced rotor assembly is free to rotate. Oil flows
through the housing, up the central spindle into the rotor.
The oil flows through a central tube into the upper part of the rotor, where
a high centrifugal force separates the dirt on the walls of the rotor. Then
the oil passes from the cleaning compartment into the stand-tube and the
lower part of the rotor, which contains two back flush nozzles. Through
the nozzles and the filter housing clean oil returns to the engine oil sump.

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Lubricating oil cooler

Lubricating oil and cooling water flow in lubricating oil cooler
Cooling position (OPEN position)
Lubricating oil flows through the channels in the end
housing of the cooler up to the cooler tube sheet.
The oil flows through the cooler shell and the large
surface of the plate fins, whereas the cooling water
flows through the smaller surface of the tube stack.
Through the opened thermostatic valve oil flows up to
an automatic filter and into the oil delivery.
By-pass position (CLOSED position)
Oil flows through the closed thermostatic valve up to
automatic filter and into the oil delivery.

03 LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Crankcase ventilation system

There is always an amount of vaporized oil in the
crankcase and it has to be ventilated out from the
engine. Vaporized oil is led out by the ventilation pipe
mounted on the engine block.
Condensed oil from venting connection is collected to
chamber of upper part of the venting pipe. Collected
oil flows back through the pipe to the crankcase and
the remaining "dry" vaporized oil continues further up
the pipe and out from the engine.
