02 FUEL SYSTEM

Control oil system on engine

The control oil system controls the fuel injection valves,

start up and safety valves (SSVs) of accumulators and
3-way valves. Control oil (which is engine lubricating oil)
is pressurised with an engine driven oil pump in the free
end of the engine. From the pump oil is delivered to a
control oil rail piping. From the rail piping oil flows
separately to each fuel injection valve and to the SSV-
and 3-way valves.

Injection pump
The injection pumps are one-cylinder pumps with built-in
injection tappets. One injection pump develops fuel pressure
to common rail line connected to pump.
Injection pumps are equipped with a flow control valve which
controls the fuel pressure development regardless of
engine’s load.
The fuel pressure is developed with a plunger, pushed up by
the camshaft via the roller tappet and pulled back by the
spring. Fuel feeding to accumulator is controlled by delivery
valve and by-pass.

Injection valve
Function of fuel injector shuttle valve
Function principle of injection valve is
described in the figure.

1. Before injection
- Solenoid valve closed
- Shuttle valve closed
2. Start of injection
- Shuttle valve open
- Fuel pressure rising
3. Injection
- Injection pressure is reached
- Needle holding pressure released
4. After injection
- Solenoid valve closed
- Shuttle valve releasing pressure

02 FUEL SYSTEM

Return fuel flow control valve (3-way valve)

3-way valve controls return fuel flow back into tanks.
Valve is controlled by control oil pressure.
When the valve is activated by the oil pressure,
returned fuel is led into pressure less tank.
When the valve is activated by spring, returned fuel
is led into mixing tank.

Components
01 Spring
02 Valve spindle
03 Piston
04 O-ring

Connections
A Return fuel from SSV volume
B Return fuel from injection valve (free flow)
C Fuel to mixing tank/fuel return line
D Control oil inlet
E Fuel to pressure less tank

02 FUEL SYSTEM

Pressure regulating valve

The valve is a directly controlled pressure limiting valve
which is installed at the outlet of each engine to
maintain the pressure of the circulating system at the
correct and constant value.
The sliding piston (poppet) is pressed against the
sealing face by a compression spring and separates the
inlet connection of the valve from outlet connection
while also sealing the bore.
