8.Deduce the dimensional formula for the following quantities (i) Gravitational
constant (ii) Young’s modulus (iii) Coefficient of viscosity.
9.Define the following units:(i) Light year (ii) Parsec (iii) Astronomical unit (Au).
10.The density of a cylindrical rod was measured by using the formula ρ=4m/πD l.
The percentage errors in m, D and l are 1%, 1.5% and 0.5%. Calculate the
percentage error in the calculated value of density.
(a)Describe the Parallax Method for the determination of the distance of a
nearby star from the earth.
(b)The parallax of a heavenly body measured from two points diameterically
opposite on earth’s equator is 60 arcsecond. If the radius of earth is 6.4 x 10 m,
determine the distance of the heavenly body from the centre of earth. Convert this
distance in A.U. Given 1 A.U. = 1.5 x 10 m.
12.(i) Differentiate accuracy and precision
(b)The diameter of a wire measured by a screw gauge was found to be
0.026cm,0.028cm,0.029cm,0.027cm,0.024cm,0.027cm.Calculate (1)mean value of
the diameter (2)mean absolute error (3)relative error (4)percentage error
13. The wavelength λ associated with a moving electron depends on its mass m, its
velocity v and Planck’s constant h. Prove dimensionally that λ∞ /mv
14. Reynold number NR a dimensionless quantity determines the condition of flow of
a viscous liquid through a pipe.NR is a function of the density of the liquid ρ ,its
average speed v and coefficient of viscosity η. Given that NR is also directly
proportional to D the diameter of the pipe .Show from dimensional considerations
that 𝑁𝑅 𝜌𝑣𝐷/η
15. Experiments show that the frequency (n) of a tuning fork depends upon the
length (l) of the prong, the density (d) and the Young’s modulus (Y) of its material.
From dimensional considerations, find a possible relation for the frequency of a
tuning fork.
