Dear student,
you are going to use this Excel workbook for the entire semester and you might use it in year 3.
So, make sure to keep it up to date and working correctly. You should have enough time to finish each section in
class, but in case you fall behind, catch up as quickly as you can because you might have a tough time in the
following week if you have an incomplete or incorrect workbook. Catch up immediately before the next class when you miss
any reason (MC, school event, …) and fix all your mistakes before the next class.
Workbook has been tampered with!
Here are some important pointers to make sure you get each worksheet right:
* don't enter values directly into the formula if you can get this value from a list in your worksheet or anywhere else in
your workbook. E.g.: Don't write for MeOH recycle stream L18=750, but instead write L18=C6 or even better, define
names and refer to the names.
* follow what we do in class immediately. Ask for help if you get stuck.
* common errors originate from wrong brackets (particularly when transferring from hand written divisions where the fraction
automatically includes brackets for both numerator and denominator) and of course wrong calculations. Be also extra carefu
accessing cells in a different worksheet. After clicking on the cell in the other worksheet, press either +,-,*,/,^ or [Enter]
* You might at times think that you have the same result as your neighbour, but you get a red instead of a green cell.
In that case check that you entered a formula instead of the value directly. Many cells require you to calculate the
value in Excel and not a pocket calculator (or your neighbour).
* always refer to values in cells, don't type in the value you see in the cell.
* Make your calculations as accurate as possible.
* Don't cut & paste, copy & paste instead and delete the source cell content afterwards. This avoids many common errors b
behaviour of moved cells (e.g. they keep properties of original cells and remove them from the original cells)
* keep frequent backups of working versions, so that you can backtrack to an old version in case you made a major mistake
* if your cell highlighting worked initially and stops working for some cells, go back to an older backup version

Clean up your work afterwards so that it looks similar in layout to the other worksheets.

Step 1
This chart is only partially complete. When you start, it has the feed line, the equilibrium line and the diagonal
line. The main task on this sheet is to add the steps (work on that from column Q onwards). But before starting
with this, add the missing lines to the graph above (the rectifying line and the stripping line).
(1) Add the rectifying line in cyan blue and the stripping line in dark blue.
Step 2
Add the steps between equilibrium and rectifying line as a thin light grey line. Do this before working on the
calculations for the line so that you can see your progress. You can call this line 'grey' or 'working steps'
Hints to draw stages (check Blackboard Learn for more hints, but try first without looking for hints):
(1) Draw steps starting from the highest mol fraction of MeOH until you reach the lowest mol fraction of MeOH.
(2) The steps start between the equilibrium curve (red) and the rectifying section line (cyan) but later change -
this part is done for you and you don't have to worry about it.
(3) Start easy: What's the first point (x/y)? What do you know about the first point (x/y)? On which line(s) is it?
(4) How to get the second point (x/y)? Is it a vertical or horizontal line? What stays constant?
(5) How to get the third point (x/y)? Is it a vertical or horizontal line? What stays constant?
(6) How to get the forth point (x/y)? Is it a vertical or horizontal line? What stays constant?
(7) How to get the fifth point (x/y)? Is it a vertical or horizontal line? What stays constant?
(8) From when onwards does this become repetitive? Can you drag the rows?
(9) If dragging leads to wrong lines, maybe you forgot to anchor some parts of your formula - check carefully.
Or maybe you drag too many or not enough rows.
(10) Finally, you have to count the steps: Just count the TRUE values in column AA. The value should be in
cell P2.
(11) Add the steps as described in Step 3 to complete your diagram.
