Life Skills help adolescents to behave in healthy and positive ways.

The 10 life skills work best in conjunction.

Life skills are not taught as these are inherent but are dormant. We need to sharpen them and
enhance through constant practice.

Life skills enhancement in school is an ongoing process cannot be dealt stand alone, it needs to
be integrated into school curriculum.

Many life skills are required to manage a particular situation effectively in diverse ways.

One particular skill may be effectively applied in many diverse situations.

KEY ME SSA G E S FROM M O D U L E I- T H E M E I

The appropriate combination of life skills in a situation is an art.

Life skills are transacted in the early years by parents, teachers, other significant members in the society
who act as role models for an individual.

Creative thinking is required when we face difficult situations.

It is best to make thinking 'out of the box a habit to find the best solution when in a difficult situation.

Through Critical thinking we can analyze the pros and cons of any situation and make right choices most
of the time.

Rehearsing application of life skills in simple situations makes it easy to use them in complex situations.
KEY ME SSA G E S FROM M O D U L E I- T H E M E II

Adolescence is a natural process. Remember, not just you but everybody goes through it. It is a period
between childhood and adulthood. Biological changes may vary in time, but they do have a pattern.

Do not hesitate to ask questions from parents, teachers or any other trusted adult.

Learn to look after the needs of your body - means looking after physical like fitness & nutrition, emotional
needs and psychosocial needs.

Life skills bring greater acceptance by others and helps adolescents to make this stage of life a joyful
experience.

We need to think critically and decide whether we really need to use the product and whether the use of it is
healthy for us.

We all have different attributes/qualities. Some we like, some we don’t.

We can either learn to like our shortcomings or change them.We have a choice.

METHODOLOGY

◾ Firstly, an initiative which could brighten our inner self is sweet and savoury Saturday.
This
will also help removing the stigma of ‘healthy food cannot be tasty’.
◾ Healthy times with nutritionist - Students can anytime approach the nutritionist
through mail/chat and have a conversation regarding their health and if they need any
assistance.
◾ We shall hold events like online Nukkad natak, music videos to spread the message of ill
effects of obesity and importance of BMI.
◾ Physical exercise sessions, Physical education coaches along with peer educators take
sessions of yoga, exercises, calisthenics, aerobics, zumba etc. Peers reaching out to
students motivating them to participate in every activity possible, pairing activity
proved encouraging.
◾ Parent partnership with peer educators is useful in spreading awareness.
◾ We can also give attractive names to healthy food to grab the student’s attention like
springy
OBJECTIVE:
ACTIVITY 1 Children will become familiar with the different food groups of My Plate

MAKE A
and the importance of variety in the diet.

“MYPLATE” PARTICIPANTS:
Children of all ages (with help). 12-player minimum.

TIME:
15 to 20 minutes depending on the group.

SUPPLIES:
Slips of paper with foods from each food group listed (one food
item per slip of paper) and a My Plate poster. For example, write
“loaf of bread,” “broccoli,” “strawberries, “glass of milk” and
“steak” on five separate slips of paper. Create enough My Plate
sets to match the number of children in the group.

LOCATION:
Can be played outdoors or indoors in a large, open area
ACTIVITY 2 DIRECTIONS:
DUMB Material required----paper and pen

CHARADES ◾ Explain the game of charades to the group.Without using words,

a person “acts out” an activity and the audience tries to guess
what the “actor” is doing.
◾ Have each volunteer draw a slip of paper with an activity written
on it and then act it out. This also can be played in teams. The
idea is to have fun.

POST ACTIVITY REVIEW:

◾ What are ways you can stay active every day? Can you think of a way to make video games be “active games”?
(Stand and jump while you play!)
◾ Let’s each set a physical activity goal.
1. How many minutes of physical activity do you think you do during the day?
2. Are you meeting the one-hour goal?
3. What are some ways to get more activity during the day?
Case study 1

too, she loves helping her mother in the
kitchen but often ends up messing up the
place and works in an untidy and unhygienic
manner, she usually complains of
stomachache due to eating food cooked in
unhygienic manner. As a peer educator how
would you help Sharmila understand the
importance of health and hygiene
Case study 2

Isha and Kriti are sisters. Mother scolded Isha for often coming home late in the
evening after play time. Isha presumed that Kriti must have complained to mother.
She told about wasting time and chatting on phone with friends after play time. Isha
comes and shouts on Kriti for complaining. What do you think should be Kriti’s style of
communication and why.

Style 1
How dare you blame me? You are a highly irresponsible girl. I am glad you got it from
mom and you deserve that.
Style 2
Oh! I am so sorry, that you got scolded. I didn't complaint, but if you think so, I am
extremely
sorry. Please don't be mad at me. It’s not my fault.
Style 3
Isha, I know you are upset because mom has scolded you. But please be aware that I
have no role to play in this. We can both go and discuss with mom.
