the Japanese words – Seiri (sort), Seiton (Straighten), Seiso
(Sweep), Seiketsu (Standardize), and Shitsuke (sustain).
These can be applied to any place – work or home – if you
want to set a strong basis for productivity.

The Five S are:

1. Sort (Seiri) is the first step in 5S. It refers to sorting the
clutter from the other items within the work area that are needed.

d. Prevent accumulation of unnecessary items.
e. Evaluate necessary items with regard to cost or other factors.
f. Remove all items that are not in use.
g. Segregate unwanted materials from the workplace
h. Do not put unnecessary items in the workplace and define a red-
tagged area to keep those unnecessary items.
2. Straighten (Seiton) is the process of taking the required items that are
remaining after removing clutter and efficiently arranging them though
the use of ergonomic principles and ensuring that every item “has a place
and that everything is in place.”
a. Arrange all necessary items so that they can be easily selected for
use.

deterioration.
c. Keep workplace safe and easy to work in.
d. Keep workplace clean and pleasing to work in.
4. Standardize (Seiketsu) is the process of ensuring that the three stage of 5S
become standardized; that there are common standards and ways of
working.
a. Standardize the best practices in the work area.
b. Maintain high standards and workplace organization at all times.
c. Maintain orderliness. Maintain everything in order and according to
its standard.
d. Put everything in its right place.
e. Make sure that every process has a standard.
5. Sustain (Shitsuke) is the fifth and final step of the 5S method. It means
“sustain” or “sustained discipline”. Shitsuke is a Japanese word that carries
a wealth of cultural meaning.
a. Keep working in order.
b. It also translates as “do without being told”
