How often things are used.

 Be sure to throw the things, otherwise
you may repent.

Sorting Practices:
1. Classify items whether necessary or
unnecessary.
•Sort contents of inside drawers, cabinet,
lockers, other areas.
•Segregate useful from non-useful items,
biodegradable or non-biodegradable.
•Stratify-sort – evaluate what to dispose,
what to file or transfer.

Sorting Practices:
In evaluating items for disposal, consider
those that are:
a.Of low use like:
Things not used in the past – dispose
Used only once in the past – store at a
distance

frequently needed, to include:
Those used only once in the past 2-6
months
Used more than once in a month

for easy access and retrieval.

2. Dispose the unnecessary and useless
items; use a red tag or any tag to identify
disposable items;
3. Recycle items when appropriate.
4. Establish policies on disposal –
oHave different color coded tags
oIdentify the files/materials to be retained and up to when
oSegregate items that can be recycled or sold or completely thrown
oDesignate storage and disposal areas.

4.Alphabetically arrange files for easy

The word ‘shine’ relates to a condition of


cleanliness
Sweep your workplace thoroughly so that
there is no dust/dirt/scrap anywhere.
The area should say “ Who I’m” and its
neatness should give you a natural welcome.

While doing Seiso keep in mind :
Cleaning should be done regularly.
Use the best cleaning agent .
All the nooks and corners should be cleaned.
Keep all the labels intact.
All the labels should correct, visible and legible to
all.

Sweeping/cleaning practices:
1.Regularly clean and sweep floors following
standard procedures.
2.Daily dust away dirt on tables, computers,
equipment, etc.
3.Schedule general cleaning, if possible once
a week.
4.Fumigate when necessary to keep pests
away.
5.Remove spots and stains using the right

6. Dispose all trash and unnecessary
materials.
7. Sanitize toilet bowls and sinks.

10. Remove dirt and cobwebs.
11. Paint wares and ceiling with bright
colors.
12. Make a cleaning schedule and find
time for general cleaning .

Consequences of not practicing SEISO:
• Performance of machines deteriorates
• The quality / aesthetic quality deteriorates
• Dirty place is unpleasant and hazardous to
health.
• Sends uncaring and irresponsible message to
the team members and society at large.
• People working at dirty areas are generally
found to have low desire to excel and their
motivation level is low.

• Always aim at maintaining the standard level of

cleanliness, hygiene and visual control.

• Keep all the 4 M’s ( Man., Machine, Material and

Method) intact, a lapse in any one of them will

make you loose the rest of the three

unanimously.
Always keep the standards flexible to changes
and improvements.

responsibilities. These must be reflected in
the job description of staff.
2.Set up cleaning schedules.
3.Establish cleaning standards and train staff
to meet these standards.
4.Take a measures to prevent dust, dirt and

Consequences of not following Seiketsu :


• Dual standards yield multiple results.
• Multiple results lead to conflicts and
confusions.
• Rework increases.

1.Keep confidential files in folders and
lock them in cabinets to protect them from
the view of unauthorized users.
2.Never leave confidential files lying on
tables.

A. Participation – get everyone involved,
make them recognize what the company
wants to achieve and their important
one.
B. Reward – recognize efforts of individuals
and groups, reward by using praises,
certificate, other means.
C. Education – orient people on the
importance of 5’S, the key elements and
standards.

D. Sanctions – show that you mean
business. Monitor compliance, record
deviations, make people accountable for
results and let them face the consequences
of unjustified deviations.
E. Structure – identify the tasks to make

schedules and deadlines.
