RISKS AND HAZARDS OF HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD

WASTE ON ENVIRONMENT AND PUBLIC HEALTH IN

DODOMA CITY COUNCIL, A CASE OF MIYUJI WARD

RESEARCHER’S NAME: AWADHI NGELA

Problem Statement
• Effective management of hazardous waste should covers all
types of wastes from all sources including hazardous waste
from industrial activities, agricultural activities and agro
industry, medical facilities, commercial centers, households
and the informal sectors (Danielle et al. 2009 and Kaseva et
al. 2011).
• Currently household hazardous waste management is
becoming an issue of concern in Tanzania due to its hazards or
risks posed into the environment and public health (Mmereki
et al. 2016, 2017).
• It has been established by UNEP, (2018) no systems has been
put in place to deal with household hazardous waste, with the
result that it is often disposed of down the drain, which has
negative consequences for the environment and human health.
Cont…
• In Tanzania like it is in many other African countries, most people mixes all
the components of household wastes, there is no segregation of household
hazardous wastes and a consistent policy framework specifically dealing
with HHW (Mmereki et al. 2017).
• It has been established by Lu et al. (2013) that in many developing
countries, only industrial hazardous and medical waste are disposed
separately and well documented. Other hazardous waste type, such as
household hazardous waste (HHW) are somewhat neglected. Although
hazardous waste from other sources may be small in quantity at the face
value, it could still have potential consequences on human health,
biodiversity and the environment in general (National Environmental
Statistics, 2017).
• For that reason, this study attempt to assess the management of household
hazardous wastes in Miyuji ward.
Research Objectives
General Objective
• To assess the risks and hazards of household hazardous
waste on environment and public health in Miyuji ward.
Specific Objectives
• To identify household hazardous wastes (HHW).
• To overview the current household hazardous waste
management practices in Miyuji ward.
• To examine environmental risks and hazards posed by
household hazardous waste.
Research Questions
S/N Research Questions Variables
1 What are the common hazardous •Sources of HHW
household wastes (HHW) in •Characteristics of HHWs
Miyuji ward? •Classification of HHWs

2 What are current household •Methods for collection of HHWs

hazardous waste management •Methods for disposal of HHWs
practices in Miyuji ward? •Methods for treatment of HHWs

3 What are the factors affecting •Education on HHWs disposal

effective management of •Funding and Human resources
household hazardous waste in •Policies, Laws and Regulations
Miyuji?
Significance Of The Study
• The results of this study will add valuable information to be availed to the
general public and policy makers about hazardous waste collection
storage and disposal as there is inadequate harmonization of hazardous
waste data management in the country (URT, National Environmental
Statistics, 2017).
• This study will impart to the residents of the entire area, extra knowledge
on better means of storage, collection and disposal methods of household
hazardous wastes.
• The study will assist the policy makers to know the existing situation and
come up with a better way of handling the household hazardous wastes to
safeguard the health of human beings and the environment conservation.
• The findings also will be a basis for further research for academicians and
scholars in the field of hazardous waste management.

Study Area
• Miyuji Ward is one among 30 wards of Dodoma
municipal, it has three suburbs namely: Mpamaa, Miyuji
proper and Mathias. Miyuji ward had the population of
16,264 people (NBS, 2012).
• Miyuji ward is found in Dodoma urban District, it
bordered by Msalato in East, Nzuguni, southern party,
Dodoma Town in South, and in western party is Mnadani
ward. Miyuji ward has the area estimated to be 26.9 km
square, where most of the land is for residential and some
few households are practicing urban agriculture (Msanya,
2018).

Sampling Frame and Sampling Unit
Sampling frame
• A sampling frame is a list of the actual cases from which
sample will be drawn (Taherdoost, 2016). The sampling
frame to be used for this study will include all households
in Miyuji ward.
Sampling unit
• The sampling unit to be used for this study will be a
household whereby head of households (HHH) will be
appointed to provide information.
Sample Size
Sampling Procedure
• In selecting sample units for inquiry from the major groups of
possible population, two methods will be used:
(a) Convenience non-probability sampling method and
(b) Purposive (non-probability) sampling method , the reason
being easily accessible.
• Purposive (non-probability) sampling method will be used
when in the ward executive officer’s office and in ward
environment management officer’s office and also with waste
collectors.
• Convenience non-probability sampling method will be used in
collecting primary data from households.
Data Processing, Analysis and Presentation

• Data Processing
The collected Data from the questionnaires will be edited,
compiled, classified, coded and summarized manually in order
to eliminate errors that might have occurred during data
collection.
Data from documentary review and field observation also will
be edited and processed before being used in a research.
