Section Two
Promotion within Apple’s extended marketing mix

Introduction

Promotional activities are a key aspect of the extended marketing mix; without them a product or service has no value if its target audience is not
made aware of its benefits. Examples of marketing tactics include advertising, public relations, sales promotions, personal selling, direct mail and
Internet marketing (Nizam, n.d.).

An overview of Apple’s promotional strategy

Apple focuses largely on four key elements; advertising, personal selling, sales promotion and PR (Greenspan, 2017). Apple promotes its
products through the website and physical stores, but they also have other businesses that do this for them, such as third party resellers. They use
personal selling in the form of store employees who are trained up to provide information which is aimed at persuading visitors to buy a product.
Sales promotion is also a widely-used tactic, for example some older models are often offered at lower prices. Finally, the company makes use of
PR in order to maximise its brand awareness. Examples of this would be exclusive interviews, and leaking new product features to ‘entice’ its
target audience (Greenspan, 2017). Patel (2018) explains how Apple even manages to promote itself without paid advertising, by making use of
the buzz created by positive reviews in the media, and product placement. According to Stampler (2012), Apple does not pay for its spots however
it revealed that it relies heavily on free product placement.

The effectiveness of Apple’s strategy

Unit 1 – Evolution of Marketing

Apple’s promotional strategy is successful because it focuses heavily on customer wants and needs. Understanding this has driven customer
retention and loyalty (Nizam, n.d.). An example of this is the change in shape to the EarPods, to a shape that fits perfectly inside an ear (IFIXIT,
2018). In addition, Apple’s unique advertising highlights the quality of the products, without stating who the desired users will be. This is a great
way to encourage customers to decide for themselves; through exploring product features, they choose who uses which product and when, rather
than Apple making that decision (Nizam, n.d.).

When studying an example of a successful marketing mix, Apple often comes top of the list since it was named the world’s most valuable brand
(Elliott, 2013). This is a clear indicator of the effectiveness of its promotional activities. In fact, it has become a benchmark for companies who
wish to attain the same global awareness (Threlfall, 2018). It has achieved marketing success by ensuring promotional activity focuses on product
uniqueness, and superiority to competitor activity (Bhasin, 2018). Apple aims to promote all features which make them stand out, through exciting
new technology such as Face ID (Apple, 2017) but also by evolving secondary products, such as by creating the unique wireless AirPods (Apple,
2018). Another way of indirectly promoting a company is to appear responsible and dedicated to people and the environment. Some would say
Apple has achieved this by championing important issues such as climate change, energy efficiency, and recycling. All of this helps build a
positive perception of the company (Nizam, n.d.). Having said this, Apple has not been without criticism when it comes to its commitment to
people, and some would argue that it must have a detrimental effect on its brand. For example, Apple is partnered with Foxconn, a large company
said to have mistreated its workers (Nizam, n.d.).

How Apple has evolved its promotional strategy over time

Apple is constantly evolving and improving its products to meet ever-changing customer needs, which is notably due to fast-paced competitor
activity. There are many companies producing high-quality smartphones and devices. Back in 2007, Apple was seen as top of the market because
it had created a new concept and idea – the first iPhone. Nowadays, there are many competitor brands with the ability to produce similar products
Unit 1 – Evolution of Marketing

(sometimes at a lower cost), creating new challenges. To take an example, Samsung are now releasing their latest phone in the S series. The new
S9 features “AR emoji” which directly rivals the iPhone X’s new feature “animojis” (Dedezade, 2017). Apple has had to adapt in order to stay
ahead of the competition. Product innovation has resulted in creative, fresh ways of marketing, which is demonstrated in the advert for “animojis”
(Apple, 2017).

Conclusion

To conclude, it is clear that Apple’s promotional strategy (which focuses on elements such as advertising and personal selling) is very effective.
Being seen as a market leader is cleverly coupled with its marketing in a suitably creative and innovative way.
