and the teacher will ask questions; * What do you notice with the following words presented? If
you remove un-, im-, re-, dis- and mis-, does the word still have its meaning? If we put back the
set of letters? Does it change its meaning? What do you call the group of letters added to the

unbalanced improper rewrite disadvantage mislead

b.2. Presentation
Prefixes are letters which we add to the beginning of a word to make a new word with a
different meaning. Prefixes can, for example, create a new word opposite in meaning to the word
the prefix is attached to. They can also make a word negative or express relations of time, place
or manner. (The teacher will post a chart containing examples of prefixes)
A base word is a word that can have a prefix or a suffix added to it. When a prefix or suffix
is added to a base word, the word's meaning changes and a new word is formed. A prefix is
added to the beginning of a base word.

C. Developmental Activities
Activity 1 (Group)
The teacher will divide the class into three (3) groups. Each group will be given a brown
envelope containing five base words and five prefixes. The group must cooperate and create 5
words using the base words and prefixes. Each group will choose a representative to present the
words created and the group must explain the meaning of the word with the prefix.

Activity 2 (Pair)
The class will be divided into two (2) groups. Group A will be receiving base word cards and
Group B will be receiving prefix cards. The group will be given 5 minutes to roam around the
class to find their Word or Prefix Partner. If the students have found their word/prefix partner,
they will present it to the class and explain the word that they have created.
Activity 3 (Individual)
The teacher will post an anchor chart on the board. The chart has four columns; the prefix
re-, mis-, dis-, and im-. Beside the chart are sticky notes that have base words written on them.
The teacher will call on volunteers to stick the word on the corresponding column. After the
sticking, the student must explain the meaning of the word.

D. Generalization
The teacher will ask the following questions;
* What did you learn today?
* What are prefixes again?
* Does prefixes change the meaning of the word?
* Where are prefixes found? at the beginning of a word or at the end?

E. Application
In a conversation, why is there a need to use prefixes to certain words? Choose a word that
has a prefix and try to describe yourself with the word that you've chosen.

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Divide the following words. Write their parts in two columns headed by prefix and
base word. Give the definition of the base word and the prefix. Then explain the definition of the
whole word by giving its definition.
