5.3.3 Indefinite Term

The indefinite term “AND/OR” must not be used.

6. TYPES OF NOTES

Based on ASME Y14.100 CNH Industrial Ag/CE notes are categorized as general notes, flag notes, local
notes or special notes.

Drawing notes and symbol text are pertinent data given in word form and used to complement the
delineation of other given data. The arrangement of the notes must not be interpreted as an order of
precedence, or sequence in manufacturing or assembly, unless specified as such on the drawing.

The following must be applicable in the preparation or use of drawing notes:

a) Reference to standardization documents must be by basic identifier, excluding revision level, except
where identification of a specific issue is essential to drawing interpretation.

b) Reference to other documents, for the purpose of specifying requirements or drawing interpretation,
must be as specific as possible. The whole, of a given document, must not be made applicable by
reference unless all of its provisions are required. When a portion of a document is applicable, the
extent of its applicability must be stated. However, reference to paragraph numbers in other
documents must not be made. Reference must be made to a method, identified requirement, class,
grade, or type. Reference must be made only to documents whose technical accuracy and
availability are assured. Any references to obsolete information must be removed.

c) Notes must not include contractual requirements, such as statements of costs; time and place of
delivery; methods of payment; and requirements for submission, approval, or distribution of data,
reports, or plans.

d) A separate note must be used for each unrelated requirement.

e) Notes are recommended to be displayed as a single level item with no multi-level, indented or sub-
notes. If needed, non-single level notes are to be according Appendix A

6.1 GENERAL NOTES

General notes are drawing notes applicable to the entire drawing or associated list including but not limited
to the Applicable Standards Block, Engineering Parts List and Title block information

6.1.1 Basic Requirements for General Notes

Unless otherwise specified, these notes:

• must be numbered consecutively as a single listing starting with Note 1. An open space (blank
single line) is required between all notes (See Figures 1 thru 4).
• when removing a note from the general notes list, the removed note must be replaced by a new
note consisting of the fully spelled out word “REMOVED” within parentheses (See Figures 5 and 6).
For details and how to record this change refer to CNH Drawing Standard DWGA120 - Drawing
Revision Practices. Note numbers of deleted notes must not be reused and the general notes must
not be renumbered.

6.1.2 Location of General Notes

The General Notes area of a drawing must be labeled “NOTES:”

These notes are to be grouped together and numbered sequentially, beginning with note 1. The preferred
method is to start at the top and progress downward (See Figure 1), the non-preferred (but sometimes
used) method of starting at the bottom and progressing upward is allowed.

On sheet size drawings, the General Notes must be located in the lower left hand corner of the drawing as
space dictates (See Figure 7).

FIGURE 7: Location of General Notes on a Sheet Size Drawing

On roll size drawings, the notes are to be located in the upper right area of the first section of the drawing
format (See Figure 8). If the notes interfere with the Engineering Parts List(s), EPL position will take
precedence and the notes must be positioned elsewhere within the first section, as close as possible to
upper right area, and must be kept together as a group (See Figure 9).

CNH Industrial Ag/CE Engineering Standards dedicated to a specific type of part may contain exceptions to
these rules (for example CNH Drawing Standards DWGA260 and DWGA265).

On multiple sheet drawings, the general notes must be located on the first sheet. On multiple sheet roll
drawings, the notes must be located in the first section of the first sheet.

If a large number of notes are needed, drawing sheet size must be increased to accommodate displaying
all of the notes on the first sheet. If more space needed, designers should take advantage of producing a
local engineering specification as defined in CNH Engineering Procedure ENPA103 CNH Engineering
Specifications to create a separated text document.

6.2 FLAG NOTES

Flag Notes are drawing notes that is identified and linked by means of a predefined symbol that applies
only at a specific location on a drawing or associated list as indicated. Flag Notes may be applied to any
portion of the drawing including but not limited to the Applicable Standards Block, Engineering Parts List
and Title Block. These notes were previously defined as Specific Notes.

6.2.1 Basic Requirements for Flag Notes

Unless otherwise specified, Flag Notes:

• have the same basic requirements for General Notes (See Section 6.1.1 and Figures 1 thru 4).
• must be identified with the Flag Note Symbol as defined in Section 6.2.2.
• the Flag Note Symbol, including the note number, must be shown at each point of application. The
flag note symbol is placed around the note number in the notes area to indicate that it applies at
specific areas on the drawing.
• when deleted from a drawing, all flag note symbols must be removed from any location on the body
of the drawing as well.
• when flag notes are shown on a multiple sheet drawing, pointer note text must be inserted between
the flag note number and the note within parenthesis or it may be displayed to the left of the Flag
Note Symbol as shown in Figure 13. This pointer note text displays the sheet number or numbers
where the flag note symbol is applied (flag note symbol on the notes region does not count). If the
note applies only to sheet 1 of the multiple sheet drawing, this pointer note text may be omitted,
but when applied to sheet 1 and some other sheet(s) the pointer note is necessary and must
include sheet 1 (See Figures 10 thru 12).

6.2.2 Flag Note Symbol

The flag note symbol for CNH Industrial Ag/CE drawings is an equilateral triangle. One side of the triangle
must be vertical, with the apex pointing to the left or right. The length of the triangle sides are 3 to 3.5
times the font size and of sufficient size to enclose a two-digit number (See Figures 10 thru 13).

Flag note symbol is placed around the flag note number on notes list and wherever the note is referenced
in the body of the drawing.

6.2.3 Flag Note Symbol Location in General Note List

Flag notes are listed, numbered and grouped with the general notes but apply only to specific points, areas
or items on the drawing.

The lateral apex of the triangle is positioned towards to right.

6.2.4 Flag Note Symbol Location in the Body of the Drawing

The flag note symbol, including the note number, must be shown at each point of application. The lateral
apex of the triangle is positioned towards the direction the note or specific area of interest is located. A
leader line may be attached to lateral apex to assist location clarity (See Figure 14).

The note is then related to its specific application on the drawing by one of the following methods:

• When the flag note applies to a specific point, area or item, the note number, enclosed in an
equilateral triangle, is shown in the body of the drawing beside the detail to which it applies (See
Figure 14).
• When the flag note applies to a specific item(s), in an associated list, and there is no item number
balloon, the note number, enclosed in an equilateral triangle, is placed next to the affected item
(See Figure 15).
• When the flag note applies to a specific part or parts in the body of the drawing, the note number,
enclosed in an equilateral triangle, is placed next to the item number balloon location(s) on the
drawing (See Figures 14 and 15).
• Note:
o When a flag note applies to any specific occurrence of an assembly component it is
recommended to apply the symbol to the item number balloon on the body of the drawing.
o When a flag note is applied to all occurrences of an assembly component, designer may
apply the flag note symbol directly to the EPL line of that component.

6.3 LOCAL NOTES

Local Notes are drawing notes located directly on the body of the drawing at the specific area or point of
application. Therefore, Local Notes are not included in the listing of general and flag notes. Requirements
specified by local notes apply only to the areas or points indicated including but not limited to the
Applicable Standards Block, Engineering Parts List and Title block (See Figure 16).

Unless otherwise specified, Local Notes

• when removing a Local Note, do not use the string “(REMOVED)”, for more details and how to
record this change refer to CNH Drawing Standard DWGA120.
• may be replaced by Flag Notes when space on the body of drawing is a limitation. Flag notes are
desirable when translations are necessary (See Section 5.2).

FIGURE 16: Sample of a Local Note

6.4 SPECIAL NOTES

Special notes are drawing notes whose documentation or definition includes explicit requirements on how
the note is to be displayed on a drawing

Unless otherwise specified, a Special Note will be applied as directed by its own separate document.

6.4.1 Material Notes

Material Notes describe the CNH material, local material or both specifications for the part.

Material callout normally appears in the title block within the CNH MATERIAL or LOCAL MATERIAL fields,
but may be defined by notes when more space is required.

Material notes may also include heat treat details such as annealing, normalizing, aging, carburizing,
hardening, tempering, plating, etc.

When used, Material notes will be located above the title block. The title block will contain the phrase “SEE
NOTES” in the CNH MATERIAL, LOCAL MATERIAL fields depending on which field(s) are being defined
by the Material notes.

For more information on this topic, refer to CNH Drawing Standard DWGA100 - Drawing Sheet Sizes and
Formats and CNH Material Specification MAT1003 - Metallic Material Designations.

6.4.2 Significant Characteristic Notes

These are placed on drawings of parts with significant characteristics. For details on these types of notes
and their placement, see CNH Engineering Procedure ENPJ100 Significant Characteristics - Application
Procedures.

6.4.3 Induction Hardening Notes

Induction hardening is placed on a drawing in accordance with CNH Material Specification CNH MAT4040
- Induction Hardening. Per CNH MAT4040, inverted equilateral triangles are used for enclosing the
acronym IHR (Induction Hardening Required) and IHP (Induction Hardening Permitted). If needed, a
sequence number is placed inside the symbol below the acronym. See Below

There are two different sizes of equilateral triangle enclosing the acronym and sequence number:
• Triangles with sides 6 times the font size are used within notes to identify the heat treatment
requirements (See Figure 17).
• Triangles with sides 4.5 times the font size are used in the body of drawing to identify the
dimensioning and local of application for Induction Hardening Required, Induction Hardening
Permitted or both (See Figure 18).

7. IMPLEMENTATION

All CNH Industrial Ag/CE drawings first revision published on the corporate drawing viewer system after
the Engineering Release date of this revision of DWGA115 must be drawn in accordance with this
document.

All CNH Industrial Ag/CE drawings released prior to the publication and adoption of this standard need not
be modified but can retain their original drawing note practices.

All revised CNH Industrial Ag/CE drawings are to follow instructions as provided in CNH Drawing Standard
DWGA120.

It is in the best interest of CNH Industrial to implement recommended practices as these may become
mandatory in future revisions of this standard, whereas, alternate practices may no longer be allowed.

Appendix A: Non-Single Level Notes

This appendix describes the use of non-single level notes.

Notes are recommended to be displayed as a single level item, but in some situations it may be necessary
to create a list of requirements or instructions where indentation and multi-levels provide better
visualization and communication.

Individual sub-levels (sub-notes) are not to be used as Flag Notes; Flag Note Symbol is to be used only for
the complete note.

• Indentation

This is to be used for a list of requirements related to each other on the same subject, with no sequence
importance. Capital letters or symbols such as “-“, “*” or “•” may be used. See examples below:
