Module 2

Exercise A
If you are a farmer and you only have one (1) time to apply nitrogen fertilizer to your rice plants, when would be the
best time to do it? Why?

Explanation: Nitrogen should be applied at 14 DAT or 21 DAS because there is active tillering and it requires
nitrogen for its growth and development
Fill in the missing numbers in the Table:
VARNAME Panicle Initiation (PI) Heading (HD) Growth Duration (GD)
Var A 60 95 125
Var B 70 105 135
Var C 90 125 155
Var D 85 120 150
Note: 60-65 days from panicle initiation to harvest.
35 days from panicle initiation to heading
30 days from heading to harvesting

Exercise B
A variety was planted at a spacing of 20 cm x 20cm, with two (2) replications. Upon harvest, the following yield
components were obtained. Calculate grain yield in g m-2 based on the given components and using both the 1000-
seed weight. Based on the result, briefly explain the importance of seed weight. What environmental factor/s could
affect seed weight?

Spikelets m-2 = 50000

Grain filling = 80%
1000-seed weight = REP1) 25 g; REP 2) 23g
Panicle per plant = 18

A. Grain yield REP 1=?

Given: Spikelet m-2 = 50,000
Grain filling = 80%
100-seed weight = 25g
Panicle per plant = 18
Panicle number//m2 = 450
18 x 25 = 450 (note: there are 25 plants/m2)
Spikelet number/panicle = 111.11
50,000 ÷ 450 = 111.11111 or 111.11
Formula:
(Panicle number/m2 x Spikelet number/panicle x % Filled spikelets x 1,000 − grain weight)
GY (g/m2) =
1000
(450m2 x 111.11 x 0.80 x 25g)
= 1000
(999,990g/m2)
= 1000

= 999.99g/m2
B. Grain yield REP 2=?
Given: Spikelet m-2 = 50,000
Grain filling = 80%
100-seed weight = 25g
Panicle per plant = 18
Panicle number//m2 = 450
18 x 25 = 450 (note: there are 25 plants/m2
Spikelet number/panicle = 111.11
50,000 ÷ 450 = 111.11111 or 111.11
Formula:
(Panicle number/m2 x Spikelet number/panicle x % Filled spikelets x 1,000 − grain weight)
GY (g/m2) =
1000
(450m2 x 111.11 x 0.80 x 23g)
= 1000
(919080g/m2)
= 1000

= 919.08g/m2

Explanation: Seed weight has a strong effect on its germination. According to Upadhaya, (2006) heavy seeds
germinate early and show better germination than small seeds. Also, seedlings from heavy seeds
survive better and yield greater dry mass than those from small seeds.

pH and water temperature are the factors that have significant effect on seed weight (Li, et.al, 2015).

Exercise C
Calculate grain yield adjusted to 14% Moisture Content (MC) of the grains having two different MC. Explain the
importance of moisture content.

Given: W= 750 g m-2

A. MC = 16%
Given:
Wi = 750g m-2
MCi = 14%
MCf = 16%

100−MCi
Formula: Wf = 𝑊𝑖 𝑥
100−MCf

100−14
Wf = 750 𝑥 100−16

86
Wf = 750 𝑥 84

Wf = 750 𝑥 1.024

𝐖𝐟 = 𝟕𝟔𝟖
B. MC=12%
Given:
Wi = 750g m-2
MCi = 12%
MCf = 16%

100−MCi
Formula: Wf = 𝑊𝑖 𝑥 100−MCf

100−14
Wf = 750 𝑥 100−12

86
Wf = 750 𝑥 88

Wf = 750 𝑥 0.98

𝐖𝐟 = 𝟕𝟑𝟓

Explanation: Moisture content is important its affects grain’s sale weight, quality, and ability to be stored long-term.
