Likewise, referees join the gig economy with a flexible and enjoyable app
that helps them earn more money officiating the sports they love.
PROBLEM
Amateur sports leagues are strained by a severe shortage of qualified referees. Yet, the
ubiquitous approach to referee recruitment and management is still a clipboard and
phone list. It is a wholly insufficient solution that leads to canceled games, shorthanded
officiating and even dangerous play. The never-ending administrative workload for
league organizers generates stress and often results in poor financial performance.
SOLUTION
Herd of Zebras is a web and mobile solution (Android & iOS) providing 10 proprietary
technology enhancements that solve the referee shortage. Leagues input schedules,
staffing needs, pay rate and certification requirements. Referees are background
checked, monitored for on-time arrival and seamlessly input scores and penalty data.
Referees can uncover opportunities to work more games in their chosen sport and
geographic preference and receive mobile payments directly to their bank account.
BUSINESS MODEL
Augmented Reality Sports Management has two proven revenue streams: Herd of Zebras
(referee payment commissions) runs on a pass-thru revenue model, while MovedOn
Sports (adult recreational leagues) engages HOZ services for referees, creating vertical
integration for expansion markets nationwide. The company also plans to develop a
virtual reality referee training center to increase engagement with referee users on an
eSports platform and plans to pursue drone and robotics referee technology sales.
MARKET
Each year, over one billion amateur sports games require two billion referee hours.
Leagues and tournaments are organized across all demographics, including youth and
adult and by multiple types of organizations, including recreational, competitive, special
needs, for-profit, non-profit and government. The top 10 U.S. officiated sports: Football,
Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Hockey, Volleyball, Lacrosse, Rugby and Tennis.
COMPETITION
Arbiter is a SaaS service provider owned by the NCAA, targeting the collegiate and
professional sports market upstream form HOZ. Silbo, launched a software matching
service with a different go to market strategy. Herd of Zebras is the only comprehensive
technology solution in the market today that matches referees with leagues and handles
all the associated payment and administrative functions at no cost to leagues.
GO-TO-MARKET & TRACTION
Amateur sports are highly community oriented, which facilitates business development
opportunities within targeted geographies. Herd of Zebras began manual revenue
generation from 2018-2020. After COVID reopen, the company has 24 league users, 822
referees, $500,000 in gross revenue, and is on track to hit $1M ARR by 1/31/22.
