for all students, regardless of race, class, color, gender, disability, sexual orientation,
learning style, or language. The goal of a comprehensive educational environment is to
ensure that all students are treated equally and have access to equal opportunities.
Student diversity and individuality should be promoted in a comprehensive educational
environment without discrimination.
The stigma around students who have disabilities assumes that they are strictly less
capable and intelligent than their traditional classroom companions. Amazingly, Cebu
Normal University (CNU) embraces inclusivity for people with disabilities.
Cebu Braille Center, placed at CNU, gives unique school programs, supportive services,
sources, and adaptive aids. This allows students with visual impairment to be
mainstreamed into the everyday faculty. The university ensures
that the needs of all students are taken into account and that obstacles that may prevent student participation have been removed.
Inclusive education in CNU doesn’t end there, Australian Embassy’s Direct Aid Program (DAP) provided a small grant to CBCI some talking
scientific calculators, braille dictionaries, zoom magnifiers, Perkins brailler, and other learning aids. There are also music and sports
equipment to enhance the delivery of special education to visually impaired students, including those with multiple disabilities associated
with blindness. Moreover, CBCI and CNU Integrated Laboratory School (ILS) elementary students participated in the first
National Toothbrush Day celebration as they participated in the simultaneous nationwide tooth brushing activity of
the Philippine Dental Association.
The programs implemented by CNU is a big leap in integrating inclusive education. Disabilities are not a
hindrance to let students discover their potential. Through inclusive education, we recognize the individuality of each
student. A disability is not a ‘despite’, it is one’s identity and it should not be shamed nor discriminated but
rather recognized and celebrated. Indeed, inclusivity should be fostered in every institution. People with disabilities belong in the community and the society as much as everyone else does. Inclusion
is the most effective means of combating discriminatory attitudes, creating welcoming communities, building inclusive societies, and achieving education for all. Cebu Normal University gives the
learners, whatever they may be and just as they are, the right to be themselves and to enjoy learning. Everyone has no deficit—they are complete, loved, and accepted wholeheartedly, without any
“despite”.
