I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Employees Provident Fund (EPF) branch
Alor Star, EPF Branch Chief of Kedah/Perlis, Mr. R.Anbanathan a/l Rajendran for lending
me a precious opportunity and trust to complete my Industrial Training in the Enforcement
Unit, Contribution Unit and also Multi Processing Centre (MPC) Unit or known as
Withdrawal Unit and Services Unit. Besides, a lot of thank to all staff for their kindness and
cooperation in providing the relevant data and information in the processing of completing
my task. It was the most unforgettable experience for me to expose to the real world
working experience and knowledge.

Last but not least, not forgetting to my family especially my parents for the support and
encouragement in completing this industrial training. Thanks to my friends who always
helped me during industrial training and also in completing this report. This experience and
knowledge will help me to face the real world working process.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Industrial Training

Industrial training is a compulsory course for all degree students in order to complete
syllabus in Bachelor of Science (Hons.) Statistics (CS241). This course takes about
16 weeks (4 months) in 7th semester and the training places are chosen by students
themselves either in the government or private sectors. The objectives of industrial
training are to expose the students with the real work environment experience and
also gain the knowledge through job execution and hands on observation. From the
industrial training, the students will also develop skills in work ethics,
communication, management and others. Moreover, this industrial training program
allows students to relate some of the theoretical knowledge with its application. The
students will be filled with good moral values such as responsibility and
commitment. It helps the students to improve their communication skill with group
of workers.

1.2 Background of Organization

The Employees Provident Fund known as EPF is a social security institution formed
according to the Laws of Malaysia, Employees Provident Fund Act 1991 (Act 452)
which provides retirement benefits for members through management of their

savings in an efficient and reliable manner. The EPF also provides convenient
framework for employers to meet their statutory and moral obligations to their
employees. EPF members comprise private and non-pensionable public sector
employees and those who opted to contribute. An EPF member according to the EPF
Act is an individual who has account and savings in the provident fund.

A contribution constitutes the amount of money credited to members’ individual


accounts in the EPF. The amount is calculated based on the monthly wages of an
employee. Current contribution rate is in accordance with wage/ salary received. For
employees who receive wages/salary of RM5, 000 and below, the portion of
employees’ contribution is 11% of their monthly salary while the employer
contributes 13%. For employee who receives wages/salary exceeding RM5, 000 the
employee contributions of 11% remains, while the employer’s contribution is 12%.

The EPF ensures that member’s savings are secure and receive reasonable dividends.
In fact, it guarantees a minimum of 2.5 per cent dividend annually. To ensure
dividend payments, the EPF invests contributions in approved the financial
instruments for optimum returns. Dividends are paid annually into members’
account. The dividends rate declared by the EPF is subjects to the returns from
investments made in the approved instruments. Annual dividends, on the one hand,
are calculated based on the opening balance members’ savings as at 1 January of
each year. Monthly dividends credited into members’ account, on the other hand, are
based on the monthly contributions received.

The vision of the organization is helping members achieve a better future and the
organization mission is safeguard members’ saving and deliver excellent services.

1.3 Background of Department Attached


In order to complete this practical training, the trainer has been attached to
Enforcement Section, Contribution Section and Multi Processing Centre (MPC)
under the supervision of Mr. Ibrahim Ismail as the Deputy Manager of Operation
Management. Enforcement Section operates at level 8, Contribution Section operates
at level 9 while Multi Processing Centre operates at level Mezzanine. Working hour
starts at 8.00 a.m. to 4.45 p.m. for every weekday except Thursdays. In EPF Alor
Star, there are five sections,
i. Service Section
ii. Multi-Processing Centre
iii. Enforcement Section
iv. Operation and Management Section
v. Contribution and Finance Section

Enforcement Section
Enforcement section has 31 staffs include staffs from prosecution and litigation
section. The head of this section is Mr. Md Sabri Hamid. In this section, the staffs are
responsible to manage all the employers who refuse to pay their contribution.

Contribution Section
Contribution section has 25 staffs and 3 trainer of integrated training scheme (SLB).
The head of this section is Haji Marzukhi Othman. The roles of this section is
manages the employer who want to pay their contribution and also manage the
members of EPF.
Multi-Processing Centre
Multi-Processing Centre has one staff only which is head of Multi-Processing
Centre, Hj. Che Hassan Md. Isa. In this section all withdrawal that need branch
approval must get approval from the head of Multi-Processing Centre first before any
transaction or payment is done.

CHAPTER 2

ASSIGNMENTS

2.1 Task 1 : i - Akaun (Member)

2.1.1 Introduction

In February 2016, EPF has introduced i-Akaun as a process to facilitate their


members besides creating win-win situation for both sides, either the
employer or the members involved in the services of EPF.

There are the services of i-Akaun offered to members which are, the
members can request for e-withdrawal, check current and previous EPF
statements, check withdrawal application status and history, check
nomination information, estimate the eligible amount for withdrawals,
savings and investments, update profile including correspondence address,
check current EPF contributions transactions and check i-Akaun activities
log.

In the process of increasing the percentage of using i-Akaun, staff of the


services section will register i-Akaun for members with their permission that
attend to EPF office for the withdrawal or any services.

After the members register i-Akaun, they can get TAC activation code. TAC
(TRANSACTION AUTHORISATION CODE) will be used for certain
transactions in i-Akaun to ensure data security. An example is when members
forgot their User ID’s or passwords. The TAC will be sent via short message
services (SMS) when they use the forgot user id/ password functions.

2.1.2 Implementation
Members are required to register for i-Akaun before using this facility.
Registration can be done at any nearby EPF Kiosk or Counter or contact the
EPF Contact Management Centre at 03-89226000. Members can activate
their i-Akaun by using the temporary the User ID and Password given after
registration. Activation must be made through the EPF official website at
www.kwsp.gov.my within 30 days.

Table 1 shows statistics of i-Akaun at the EPF from month January 2017 until
May 2017.

Based on the figure 4, it shows the statistics of i-Akaun at EPF. In month


January 2017, there are 157229 registrations of i-Akaun. For the following
month, the number of registrations steadily increased until March about
162775 registration on February and 176326 registrations on March. For the
next month, the registration of i-Akaun are decline until March about 144356
on April and about 142922 on March. Based on the increasing and decreasing
pattern of registration of i-Akaun, the number of total new membership will
become lowest on the next year 2018 since member already have i-Akaun.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

3.1 Benefit of the assignments


Throughout my practical training, there are many benefits and advantages gained
from the task that been done.

From task 1, it gives the knowledge about the process of activation of i-Akaun. EPF
has created i-Akaun system to facilitate their members to surf anywhere and anytime.
It also gives chances to improve the knowledge, experience and communication
skills. On the other hand, it also gives the benefits on how to communicate with
different level of EPF staff, employees and employers to attract them to open i-
Akaun. By using i-Akaun, members can check their statement via online. EPF
printed statement also can be obtained via the EPF kiosk that provided at each branch
of the EPF and also at UTC. EPF printed statement is important to employees to
determine whether their employees make monthly contribution or not. This
information is very useful face the real working world.

From task 2, it allows to understand in details about e-payment that was used by the
employer to pay their contribution.

3.2 Summary of Industrial Training


During 16 weeks of industrial training, the trainer has learned much knowledge and
new experience about the EPF. Previously, as a student, only know that the EPF is an
organization that used by private employers to pay their contribution and members
that reach age 50 can make a withdrawal. But, after making industrial training here,
the trainer get new information where there are 16 kinds of withdrawal scheme. In
addition to that, during the training here, the trainer get to know what are account 1
and account 2 and also know how to register and activate i-account. Moreover, after
being attached at Contribution Section, the trainer knows how to do e-payment which
will be implemented in future toward the employers. The trainer also got to know
how the staffs manage the employers who refuse to pay their contribution.

Besides that, industrial training in EPF is enjoyable because the trainer can learn
something new. The experienced get is impossible to obtain in class. They taught the
trainer how to do the task and can understand the guidance that they gave. The
trainer becomes more confident to do the task. The tasks given require creativity,
patience, communication, discipline and many more.

Towards the end of industrial training, the trainer realizes that there are a few things
that have been improved and need to be improved. The trainer becomes more
discipline, more punctual and more independence. Punctuality is very important in
all organizations either it is private or non-private organization. The trainer will make
sure that will arrive before 8 am to avoid lateness. .

Finally, the trainer hopes that future trainees do not waste the opportunity that was
given during industrial training that will be used in career onwards.
