MUSIC 10
Fourth Grading Period
Week 3
Key Concepts
For today’s lesson, we are going to learn how certain effects are accomplished when
combining the different elements of theater with music. To review, the elements of
theater are as follows:
Music as a sensory element affects our emotions. Certain sounds, modes, scales, and
other elements of music affect what we feel when we listen to them. For example,
generally songs written in the major scale tends to be upbeat, happy and cheerful.
On the other hand, songs written on the minor key generally sounds dark, gloomy,
and sad. Tempo and dynamics also play an important part in invoking emotions to
listeners. Fast Tempos can increase heartbeat, giving a sense of excitement or
anticipation. Slow tempos can provide a feeling of serenity and peace, but also of fear,
mysticism, and awe. Music, in combination with the Formal, Technical, and
Expressive elements of theater will invoke different emotions depending on the
ccombination

Then, the silence at timestamp 1:43 gave an eeriee silece, while anticipating
what comes next. Then in her crucified form, it comes in a slow but suspenseful
orchestral music, and with her high-pitched singing and occasional dissonant
notes by the piano further intensifies the fear – she is not someone to be
messed with.
The music started loud and erratic, then proceeds with erratic violins under a
sublime background. Sisa’s costume and makeup, along with her erratic
singing, the dark gloomy atmosphere created by the dark blue background and
dim lights create an illusion of madness. The music changing back and forth
from erratic and sweet exemplifies a mad person’s disposition – angry, erratic
and violent in one moment, then sweet and happy again and vice versa. The
mystical background adds another layer of anguish, showing that the
character is not in the realm of reality.
Remember if left alone and without music, whatever the actors and actresses
do may end up confusing and boring. Music and sound complete the scenario,
drawing the audience closer and closer to the effect the director wants to
portray.
