The First Prenatal Visit

This visit is usually the patient’s first contact with medical services during her pregnancy. She must be treated
with kindness and understanding in order to gain her confidence and to ensure her future co-operation and
regular attendance. This opportunity must be taken to book the patient for antenatal care and thereby ensure
the early detection and management of treatable complications.

SCENARIO DAY 1:

Ana, a 25-year-old, part-time teacher has come to the health center for her first prenatal visit. She tells you she
missed her period 4 weeks ago and immediately took a home pregnancy test. Her LMP was last August 20,
2021. She’s excited that it was positive, because she and her husband have been trying for several months to
get pregnant. She adds that her husband, John, doesn’t seem a bit scared: “I don’t know if that’s a good thing
or not,” she confides. She’s also worried about being a good parent: “I’d die,” she says, “if I turned into the
same kind of parent as my parents.”
Date of Prenatal Care: November 12,2021
