Exercise 1. Answer the following questions about the poem The River-Merchant’s Wife: A
Letter by Li Po.
1. What is the main theme of the poem The River-Merchant’s Wife: A Letter?
The main theme of the poem is all about the process of developing love between a man
and a woman for each other.

2. Write down the lines that show signs that the letter writer was immature when she got
married?
The lines that shows that the writer is still immature is found at the second stanza:
“At fourteen I married My Lord you.
I never laughed, being bashful.
Lowering my head, I looked at the wall.
Called to, a thousand times, I never looked back.”

3. What are the words and phrases which show that the two are deeply in love?
The words or phrases that shows how deeply in love the two are found in third stanza,
“I desired my dust to be mingled with yours Forever and forever, and forever.” At tthis
time the young wife shows her love with her husband unlike the previous that she
cannot even look at him. The husband also showed how he love his wife when he
dragged his feet when he went he. Showing that he didn’t want to leave his wife but he
has too. This part can be seen in the first line of the fifth stanza, “You dragged your feet
when you went out”

4. What is the main conflict of the poem The River-Merchant’s Wife: A Letter?
The main conflict in this poem is the loneliness of the young wife being separated with
her husband.

Exercise 2. Answer the following questions about the poem Unending Love by Rabindranath
Tagore.

1. What are some of the numberless forms that love may take?

The numberless forms that love may take cannot be counted. It is about loving the
person unconditionally and accepting all his/her flaws.

2. What images of love are remembered forever? Give examples.


images of love that can be remembered forever are those being shared in a moment.
Moments that both lead you in a commitment for a lifetime.

3. What does the poet mean by the last stanza?


In the last stanza, he already acknowledges that he already found his great love, and
that what universal joy, sorrow and other emotions can now be feel. The memories of
love that merge their love as one-cannot be brought to end for it is already in a songs of
poets past and forever.

4. What does he mean by the last two lines? Explain comprehensively.


The last two lines is centered on “memories” that appear on the lover’s mind. Those
memories of love merge into singularity that become “one love”. There is a sense of
oneness for it doesn’t matter if they are apart or not. In the last line, he adores his
beloved with the songs of poet from the past and present.
