PCC3xxx Genset Controls

• PCC3xxx Genset Controls are fully

integrated controls which support
paralleling genset applications
• MCM3320 master control is designed to
interface with PCC3xxx Genset Controls

PCC3xxx Paralleling

• All PCC3xxx controls have common

paralleling interface and functions
• Primary Paralleling Functions:
¾Dead bus (First Start)
¾Synchronizing
¾Load Sharing (Isolated Bus Parallel)
¾Load Governing (Utility Parallel)
¾Genset Paralleling Breaker Control
¾Protections

Dead Bus (First Start)

• Allows one and only one genset to close its
breaker to a dead bus
• Genset must be “ready to load” (>90%
voltage and >90% frequency)
• All other gensets then must synchronize
• PCC3100 and PCC3201 have a “first start”
input – this signal is supplied by an external
module: either “First Start Sensor” (old) or
“First Start Bus PT Module” (newer)
• PCC3300 will integrate function (no external
module required)

Synchronizing

• Matches voltage, frequency, and phase to

the live bus
• Sync Check verifies proper conditions are
met, then closes genset paralleling breaker
• PCC3xxx will only synchronize itself to a live
bus
• MCM3320 is required for synchronizing a
multi-genset bus to another source

Load Share

• Paralleled gensets on an isolated bus must

share real and reactive power
• Two methods: Droop or Isochronous
• Droop is simple passive method, but results
in frequency and voltage changing with load
• Isochronous maintains constant frequency
and voltage, but requires a way for gensets
to communicate with each other
• PCC3xxx controls support both methods

5
Isochronous Load Share
• Gensets share an equal percent of the load relative
to their own rating
• PCC3xxx gensets communicate sharing through
their “load share lines”
• “load share lines” are interconnected between
gensets
• One set of lines is for kW sharing
• Other set of lines is for kVAR sharing
• PCC3xxx adjusts engine fueling command to affect
kW sharing while maintaining constant frequency
• PCC3xxx adjusts alternator excitation to affect
kVAR sharing while maintaining constant voltage

February 16, 2006

Load Share & MCM3320

• MCM3320 connects to the “load share lines”

in order to synchronize a multi-genset bus to
another source
• kW load share line is biased by MCM3320
in order to affect genset bus frequency and
phase
• kVAR load share line is biased by
MCM3320 in order to affect genset bus
voltage
• Load sharing method used must be
Isochronous

Load Govern

• When gensets are paralleled to the utility source,

the frequency and voltage are determined by the
utility source, not the gensets
• PCC3xxx goes into this mode when the genset
paralleling breaker is closed and the utility parallel
input is active
• PCC3xxx controls the kW and kVAR load output
instead of the speed and voltage.
• PCC3xxx controls kW output by adjusting engine
fueling command
• PCC3xxx controls kVAR (or power factor) output by
adjusting alternator excitation command

Rev 1.0 prd PCC3xxx Paralleling Intro 13

February 16, 2006

Genset Paralleling Breaker Control

• PCC3xxx controls its own paralleling

breaker
• Closes breaker only when required sync
check or dead bus conditions are met
• Opens breaker on shutdown faults, normal
stop, or external inhibit
• Performs “Fail To Close” and “Fail To Open”
diagnostics

Rev 1.0 prd PCC3xxx Paralleling Intro 14

February 16, 2006

7
Paralleling Protections/Diagnostics

• PCC3xxx acts to protect system integrity as

well as protect its own genset
• Paralleling-specific Protections/Diagnostics
include:
¾Reverse kW (motoring)
¾Reverse kVAR (alternator loss of excitation)
¾Genset Breaker Fail To Close
¾Genset Breaker Fail To Open
¾Fail to Synchronize
¾Phase Rotation Mismatch
