This vocabulary workbook is designed to provide language building activities for beginning
English language learners (newcomers) during independent class time, or small group
instruction. Students learn, and practice using, basic “everyday” vocabulary as they
complete the workbook activities.
The workbook is categorized by topics. Each topic consists of a reference “poster” and
several practices pages. Students use the posters to assist them in completing the
practice pages. Activities are designed to require little to no support from the teacher in
order for students to successfully complete.
Assign workbook activities so that student(s) know exactly what to work on during
independent class time. Assigning one topic per week is appropriate. Two topics may be
assigned if the student is acquiring vocabulary quickly.
On the top of each page, an image directs students to which materials are needed in
order to complete the activity. For example…
Printing options vary. Print one topic at a time, or print the entire unit (double sided)
and staple at the top left corner. Another option is to use a three ring binder and add new
units as needed. This option keeps all the vocabulary activities together in one place. Get
fancy and create a vocabulary notebook by using a binding machine to add a spiral spine.
This resource is not intended to replace whole group instructional class time. It is
important that ELLs are as much a part of the class and daily activities as everyone else.
Introduce the workbook to your student(s) and work through the first topic together so
that they can see how to do it. Checking-in with students on occasion to see that the
workbook activities are being completed correctly, and that the students understand the
expectations, is also recommended.
*NOTE - pgs. 16-23 - For teachers outside of the U.S., alternative spellings for color and gray
(colour and grey) are provided.
