PREFACE
PETRONAS Technical Standards (PTS) publications reflect the views, at the time of publication,
of PETRONAS OPUs/Divisions.
They are based on the experience acquired during the involvement with the design, construction,
operation and maintenance of processing units and facilities. Where appropriate they are based
on, or reference is made to, national and international standards and codes of practice.
The objective is to set the recommended standard for good technical practice to be applied by
PETRONAS' OPUs in oil and gas production facilities, refineries, gas processing plants, chemical
plants, marketing facilities or any other such facility, and thereby to achieve maximum technical
and economic benefit from standardisation.
The information set forth in these publications is provided to users for their consideration and
decision to implement. This is of particular importance where PTS may not cover every
requirement or diversity of condition at each locality. The system of PTS is expected to be
sufficiently flexible to allow individual operating units to adapt the information set forth in PTS to
their own environment and requirements.
When Contractors or Manufacturers/Suppliers use PTS they shall be solely responsible for the
quality of work and the attainment of the required design and engineering standards. In
particular, for those requirements not specifically covered, the Principal will expect them to follow
those design and engineering practices which will achieve the same level of integrity as reflected
in the PTS. If in doubt, the Contractor or Manufacturer/Supplier shall, without detracting from his
own responsibility, consult the Principal or its technical advisor.
Subject to any particular terms and conditions as may be set forth in specific agreements with
users, PETRONAS disclaims any liability of whatsoever nature for any damage (including injury
or death) suffered by any company or person whomsoever as a result of or in connection with the
use, application or implementation of any PTS, combination of PTS or any part thereof. The
benefit of this disclaimer shall inure in all respects to PETRONAS and/or any company affiliated
to PETRONAS that may issue PTS or require the use of PTS.
Without prejudice to any specific terms in respect of confidentiality under relevant contractual
arrangements, PTS shall not, without the prior written consent of PETRONAS, be disclosed by
users to any company or person whomsoever and the PTS shall be used exclusively for the
purpose they have been provided to the user. They shall be returned after use, including any
copies which shall only be made by users with the express prior written consent of PETRONAS.
The copyright of PTS vests in PETRONAS. Users shall arrange for PTS to be held in safe
custody and PETRONAS may at any time require information satisfactory to PETRONAS in order
to ascertain how users implement this requirement.

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 SCOPE
This PTS lists the standard forms applicable to electrical, mechanical and project
engineering.
This is a revision of the PTS dated September 2002; a summary of changes is given in
Section 1.4.
Prior to September 2002, editions of this PTS were in the form of a binder containing the
standard forms themselves. This practice was discontinued because the forms are now
available in electronic form. For Shell users, the forms are available in electronic format on
the Shell Wide Web, at address http://sww.shell.com/standards/ (in the PTS section, under
the tab "Standard Forms").
For data sheets, requisition sheets and data/requisition sheets, refer to PTS 30.10.01.10
1.3 DEFINITIONS
The Contractor is the party which carries out all or part of the design, engineering,
procurement, construction, commissioning or management of the project, or operation of a
facility. The Principal may undertake all or part of the duties of the Contractor.
The Manufacturer/Supplier is the party which manufactures or supplies equipment and
services to perform the duties specified by the Contractor.
The Principal is the party which initiates the project and ultimately pays for its design and
construction. The Principal will typically specify the technical requirements. The Principal
may also appoint an agent or consultant authorised to act for and on behalf of the Principal.
The word shall indicates a requirement.
The word should indicates a recommendation.

9 Operating temperature The temperature of the medium during normal process operation. This
temperature is taken as the continuous exposure temperature of the tracing.
10 Maximum medium temperature The maximum temperature that the heat tracing is allowed to reach in the
current design under limits imposed by any element in the system like:
- medium
- pipe material
- insulation material
11 Maintain temperature The temperature that needs to be kept by the tracing at the lowest ambient
temperature.
12 Exposure temperature The temperature of the medium during upset condition of the process. This
temperature is used as the intermittent temperature, which the tracing cable
must be able to withstand.

Column Title Description
13 Steam out The temperature of the steam used for pipe cleaning. The auto trace cables
may be exposed to +190 °C intermittently. If steam out is not applicable,
enter N.A. in this column.
16 Heat loss The heat-loss of a given pipe at maintain temperature for the lowest ambient
temperature. Including ..…% heat-loss safety factor.
17 Type of heat tracing cable Catalogue number of selected electrical trace cable.
18 Thermal output The heat output of the tracing cable at maintain temperature with a supply
voltage of 230 V.
19 Spiral ratio The spiral ratio gives the number of tracing elements on the pipe. This is
only applicable to straight tracing.
20 Cable length item The length of tracing cable required to keep the item at maintain
temperature.
22 Stub-outs Stub-outs are short pieces that are attached to the process pipe and need to
be traced (e.g. drains, vents, instrument connections etc.)
No: The number of stub-outs in the described item.
Heater length/stub-out: The total of tracing cable to be installed per stub-out.
28 Phase This identifies which phase of the Main box the junction box is connected to
(L1, L2 or L3).

forms, PTS 05.00.54.81;
- final drawings only are stipulated on the "RED" form, PTS 40.10.01.93
In either case the "RED" form states the number of prints and transparencies to be despatched.
Under no circumstances should any drawing coded "C" be included on the "FDS".
Revised prints of these drawings should be submitted to the Distribution Office under cover of an "ADS"
It is essential that all information is typed and appears only in the correct space.
In addition to self-explanatory notes contained within the attached sheets, suppliers should note the following
instructions:
Space 4. If drawings are complete, delete the word "PART"; if other drawings are to follow,
delete the word "COMPLETE".
Space 9.
- Insert names and addresses as given on the RED form.
Space 10.
Space 14. Insert supplier's drawing revision number, i.e. new revision numbers resulting from the
Approval Office's indications on drawings coded "B".
Space 16. Where drawings have been released for construction (either code "A" or code "B"), insert
the Approval Office number, as shown in space 16 of the "ADS"
on both the Final Drawing Specification and on the drawings.
Space 19. To be used for additional comments, if any. Please do not comment by letter.
The "Instructions" given at the foot of sheet 1 and 2 shall be carefully followed.
To minimise delays, please ensure that copies 2, 3 and 4 are sent to the correct address, as indicated on the "RED"
form.
