GABION RETAINING WALL AT IT PARK MAGARPATTA

ENVIRONMENTAL/ SLOPE PROTECTION

Problem:

Magarpatta, Pune is a self-contained residential cum in-

dustrial / corporate settlement spanning over 700 Acres of
land. Its award winning design and eco friendly construc-
tion made it the first such settlement in India to receive the
ISO 9001 Certification.

IT park was to be constructed by Kumar Properties at this

location. For this purpose a fill of around 6-7 m was pro-
vided, the slope of which had to be protected. Also a canal
passes by the edge of the fill, so there will be chances of
developing hydrostatic forces.

The soil present at the site is Black cotton. Considering

the engineering properties of soil, foundation replace-
ment was also advised.

Solution:

Since Black Cotton soil is highly sensitive to seasonal

moisture content variations and can lead to distress of the
structure, foundation replacement was done with stone
dumping. To provide protection to the slope of the fill and
the canal, Gabion wall was constructed.

The MACCAFERRI Gabion is a rectangular cage made of

hexagonal woven steel wire mesh. They are uniformly par-
titioned, of variable sizes, interconnected with adjacent
cages and filled with stone at the site of use, to form flexi-
ble, permeable, monolithic structures such as retaining
walls for road and railway projects.

As rigid structures are costlier and exerts pressure at the Photo 2: During Constrution
base, the flexible gabion walls are happen to be quite suit-
able for specified condition as these are flexible, cost effec-
tive, compatible and environment friendly as it allows vege-
tation. Separate drainage arrangements is not required for
gabion walls as they are permeable.
