SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT

• School improvement is the process by which schools become more effective


both in terms of academic outcomes as well as in developing the social and
cultural wellbeing of the children and adults within the school (Baines, 2019).
• Fitzpatrick presented a six-part framework for planning school reform based on
his study into high-performing schools.

DEVELOP A SCHOOL PROFILE

• Developing a school profile is the baseline of the process


• The schools gather and analyze it in 4 areas – stakeholder viewpoints, school
characteristics, student performance, and student and community
characteristics.
• Schools should break down student performance data (gender, race) and look at
trends in community variables over time.

DEFINE THE SCHOOL MISSION

• Teachers define schools mission and vision


• They must respond these questions, what is the main goal of our school? What
do we believe about teaching?
• Mission must be "vibrant" and serve as "a decision screen."

DEFINE DESIRED RESULTS

• Define desired results for student learning.


• What teachers anticipate their students to know as a result of their learning
must be precisely determined.
• Teachers must set priorities for improving student learning.

DETERMINE THE INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES

• Determine how the school's instructional practices and organizational


conditions help or hinder achievement of the mission and the desired results for
student learning.
• After focusing on student work for a while, educators now turn their attention
to their own work, including their professional development, curriculum, etc.

DEVELOP AN ACTION PLAN

• According to Fitzpatrick, the school shouldn't start formulating its action plan
until after this stage of the procedure and education professionals should
choose research-based action plans for improvement.
• Teachers must also set a time line, identify resources, assign responsibilities for
implementing the plan, and develop ways to evaluate the plan's effectiveness.

IMPLEMENT THE PLAN

• Carry out the plan and recording outcomes.


• The measures that the school's educators will use to judge the plan's success in
terms of improvements in student learning must be decided.
