VIII. Exercise Problems:

1. A car has an acceleration speed of 8m/s2. (a) How much time for it is needed to reach
a velocity of 24m/s if it starts from rest? (b) How far does it go during this period?

Given: Acceleration 'a' = 8 m/s²

Final Velocity 'v' = 24 m/s
Initial Velocity 'u' = 0 m/s
To Find: Time taken and Displacement
Solution:

 Time taken by the car

The first equation of motion 'v = u + at' can be used to determine the time 't' taken by the car.
Therefore, substituting the given values to get;
⇒ 24 = 0 + 8t
⇒ t = 24/8 = 3s
⇒t = 3s

 Displacement of the car

And, using the third equation of motion, 2as = v² - u², we can find the displacement 's'.
Therefore,
⇒ 2 × 8 ×s = (24)²- (0)²
⇒ s = 576/16 = 36m
⇒ s = 36m
Therefore, the time taken by car is 3s. During this period, the car traveled a displacement
of 36m.
2. A baseball is moving at 25m/s when it is struck by a bat and moves off in the opposite
direction at 35m/s. If the impact lasted 0.01 sec, find the baseball acceleration after the
impact.

Given: V1= 25m/s

V2= 35m/s opposite side= -35m/s
Time taken= 0.01sec
Solve for: acceleration
𝑉2−𝑉1
Formula:𝑎 =
𝑇
Solution:
−35 − 25
𝑎= = −𝟔𝟎𝟎𝟎𝒎/𝒔𝟐
0.01
Therefore, the baseball acceleration after the impact is -6000m/s2

3. The brakes of a car whose initial velocity is 30 m/s are applied and the car receives an
acceleration of -2m/s2 (negative acceleration means deceleration). How far will it had gone
(a) when its velocity has decreased to 15m/s and (b) when it has come to a stop?

Given: Va= 30m/s

a= -2m/s2
Find: time to solve for (a) and (b)
∆𝒗 𝑽𝟐−𝑽𝟏 𝟏
Solution: 𝒕 = (a)= (b)= displacement= 𝒗𝟏 𝒕 + 𝒂𝒕𝟐
𝒂 𝑻 𝟐

0/𝑚𝑠 − 30𝑚/𝑠
𝑡= 15𝑠
−2𝑚/𝑠

Solve for acceleration:

15𝑚/𝑠 − 30𝑚/𝑠
(𝑎) = = −𝟏𝒎/𝒔𝟐
15

Solve for displacement: where in acceleration is equals to -1m/s2

𝟏
(𝒃) = 𝟑𝟎𝒎/𝒔(𝟏𝟓𝒔) + (−𝟏𝒎/𝒔𝟐 )(𝟏𝟓)𝟐 = 𝟑𝟑𝟕. 𝟔𝒎
𝟐

Therefore, the acceleration is -1m/s2 when the velocity decrease to 15m/s and it will stop if
the car reached 337.6 meter
4. The initial speed of a car having excellent brakes is 60km/hr. When the brakes where
applied the car is brought to rest in 5 seconds. Find the acceleration of the car?
Given= V1= 60km/hr 16.667 m/s
V2= 0 m/s
T= 5s
Solve for= acceleration
Solution:
0 − 16.667
𝑎= = −𝟑. 𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟒 𝒎/𝒔𝟐
5

Therefore, the acceleration of the car is−𝟑. 𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟒 𝒎/𝒔𝟐
