Module 4 Written Assessment

I - Short Response. Read each item carefully. Write your answers on the answer sheet on the next
page.
1. Balboa Park in San Diego as an outdoor organ. When the air temperature increases, the
fundamental frequency of one of the organ pipes
a) increases
b) decreases
c) stays the same
d) is impossible to determine
(the thermal expansion of the pipe is negligible)
Give a short explanation of you answer.
2. Suppose you’re on a hot air balloon ride, carrying a buzzer that emits a sound of frequency f. If
you accidentally drop the buzzer over the side while the balloon is rising at constant speed, what
can you conclude about the sound you hear as the buzzer falls toward the ground? Give a short
explanation of your answer.
a) The frequency and intensity increase.
b) The frequency decreases and the intensity increases.
c) The frequency decreases and the intensity decreases.
d) The frequency remains the same, but the intensity decreases.
3. Explain the relation between the wavelength and the period of a wave.
4. If the handle of a vibrating tuning fork is held against a table, the sound of the tuning fork beams
louder. Why?
5. If a huge explosion occurs from a distance, which will you be able to observe first, the sound of
the explosion or the tremor of the ground? Why?

II - Problem Solving. Analyze the problems carefully, then solve them on the spaces provided on
the answer sheet. Be systematic when answering. Write the given, label them; the required; and all
calculations pertinent to the problem. Encircle your final answer.
1. The International Space Station has a mass of 4.19 x 105 kg and orbits at a radius of 6.79 x 106
m from the center of Earth. Find (a) the gravitational force exerted by Earth on the space station,
(b) the space station’s gravitational potential energy, and (c) the weight of an 80.0-kg astronaut
living inside the station.
2. It take 89.2 years for a comet to travel around its elliptical orbit. in which its perihelion is 0.670
AU. Calculate the (a) the semi major axis of the comet and (b) an estimate of the comet’s
aphelion, both in astronomical units (AU).
3. A spring is hung from a ceiling, and an object attached to its lower end stretches the spring a
distance of 5.00 cm from its equilibrium position. If the spring constant is 47.5 N/m, determine the
mass of the object.
4. An archer pulls her bowstring back 0.400 m by exerting a force that increases uniformly from zero
to 230 N. (a) What is the equivalent spring constant of the bow? (b) How much work is done in
pulling the bow?
