Abstract
Many companies still struggle with barcoding & labeling in the warehouse. In this
introductory session, we will look at the different types of barcodes, how to generate these
barcodes from your ERP and a dive into the most common tools used for this
purpose. We will explore options for scanners & software for handling barcoded
transactions, along with common pitfalls companies should avoid when implementing
barcoding and labeling solutions. We will also look at the new industry mandates for
SSCC, GS1, GTIN & SGTIN and discuss how RFID compares to barcoding, and the first
steps you can take to get started.
Objectives
1. - Understand the basics for barcoding
2. - Learn about options to get started.
3. – How to use barcoding to comply with new labeling mandates
About iNYXA
Common Barcode Formats
Common Linear Formats Common 2D Formats Specialized Formats
Common Uses in Supply Chain
Barcode Item Numbers
- Barcode could be your Item Number in your ERP, OR
- May use standards as well. UPC-A, UPC-E
- GS1 (GTIN) (Global Trade Identification Number). etc.
Item Lot Numbers,
Item Serial Numbers.
Serialized Shipping Container Codes (SSCCs)
- May use standards, like SSCC, SGTIN.
Stock Locators
Shipment / Delivery Numbers
Purchase Order Numbers.
RMA / Return Material Authorization Numbers.
Package Tracking Numbers
Printing Barcoded Labels.
• Most common approach is for your ERP to export data to a
Label Printing software, which then sends the output to the
necessary printer.
• Several newer printers have XML capability built in. So an
XML file with data can be sent straight to the printer. The label
format is already uploaded in the printers memory, so the
printer simply takes the data from the XML, selects the format
(Often based on a tag in the input XML), and prints the
necessary label.
• It is possible to add simple liner barcodes to most reports using
barcode fonts.
Printing Barcodes – Common Pitfalls
1. Not computing check digit correctly.
– It is possible to get a Barcode Font for Oracle Reports.
– If you use Code39, you can send your text to the printer or report directly in Cod39.
However if you use other formats like Code128, the check digit computation is
mandatory. Without calculating the check digit, your system will be unable to print.
2. Send barcode as an bitmap image, instead of as a Code + Text.
– This can dynamically increase the size of a label or report. If you are sending
bitmaps instead of Code + Text, you may overwhelm the printer / printer queue
memory. Leading to long wait times for labels / documents, or skipped/ missing
labels in a large set.
3. Changing the Aspect ratio, or compressing the barcode too much.
- Barcodes can often be placed like an image. A lot of tools allow you to
change the aspect ratio of the barcode. Sometimes this can lead to
barcodes that will not scan or scan with difficultly on certain scanners.
Types of Scanners & Common Setups
Wedge Scanners (Linear and/or 2D with Imager)
- Serve as an extension to the keyboard. Will capture data at the location where the
cursor is currently at.
- Can be wired or Wireless
- Auto Enter OR Tab after each Scan. Symbol DS-2278-SR
Fixed mount scanners. Scan packages as they pass on a conveyer.
- Can typically read all barcodes in their view area. A Format can be set to determine
which barcode has meaning to the application and should therefore be passed back to the
application.
Mobile Computers
- Can have a Linear or a 2D scanner or an imager.
- Scanners can be Regular Rage or Long rage.
Mobile Phones / Tablets with ordinary camera.
- Can typically scan QR Codes, and most linear formats.
- In most cases, the decoding is done through software and not through hardware. This
typically requires an extra second or half second for each scan.
- Often phone cameras are not able to decode dense 2D Datamatrix or PDF415. e.g.
like the barcode you see on your boarding pass.
Standardized Labeling Example
• Goal –
– Provide Globally Unique Identification. For Items, Serialized
Cases etc.
– Provides several carriers. E.g. 1-D Barcodes, 2-D Barcodes,
RFID Tags etc.
– Member companies for GS1 request and are assigned a Pre-Fix
that they use on their barcodes, The Pre-Fix makes their
barcodes unique across the world for GS1 member companies.
A GEPIR (Global Electronic Party Information Registry) can be
used to lookup the owner given any GS1 barcode or RF-ID Tag.
Labeling Mandates for Serialized Shipping
Container codes (SSCCs)
• Serialized Shipping Container codes.
– Each case on each mixed pallet needs to have a unique serialized
shipping container code (SSCC).
– In some cases the pallet needs to have a separate code.
– Outbound Advanced Shipment Notice sent to the customer needs to
contain information about which Pallet has which Case SSCC, and
further what items, lots or serial numbers are present in each
serialized case.
• This allow your receivers – who may be large distribution
centers, to efficiently receive, break-up, and send your goods to
their correct storage or to downstream stores or distributor
Centers.
Incorporating Barcodes into your world (E-Business Suite)
• Wedge Scanner - receive against Oracle Forms.
