Connected Logistics
The Connected Logistics…

• An intelligence revolution is under foot, and it’s changing how we think about
logistics at every altitude.

• Using the latest Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, players in the transportation
and logistics industry are reaching new heights in operational performance,
whether they’re operating right here on the ground, under water or 30,000 feet
in the air.
WHAT is IOT (In Logistics)?

• The Internet of Things in Logistics is a system in which the various types of

sensor embedded into the network communicate with each other and share
intelligence.
• These applications are currently limited in scope(And evolving) and focus on
specific subparts of the logistics chain in which the sensors are embedded to
capture data such as location, Condition, temperature, humidity and so on.
• Using communication technologies such as networked radio-frequency
identification (RFID), wireless sensor networks and near-field communication,
the system can relay important information regarding the status of the shipment
to the central control system.
• This will Improve shipment visibility, safety, efficiency, and customer experience
with a connected transportation system that takes full advantage of data
analytics.

Challenges
Business Challenges

We all are aware of general challenges about logistics

• Global Visibility /Track & Trace

• Carrier Response
• On-Time delivery

Other than that…

Business Challenges

There are many other strategic challenges for logistics and transportation sector.
The most important near term challenges are

• Changing Customer Expectations

• Continuous technology breakthrough
• New competitors and increased competition
• New way to collaborate

Overview with OTM
What is Oracle Transportation
Management(OTM)?
• Oracle Transportation Management (OTM) provides a single platform for
companies to manage all transportation activity throughout their Supply Chains.
The solution allows companies to minimize cost, optimize service levels, and
create flexible business process automation within their global transportation
and logistics networks.
• Specifically designed to support the needs of both shippers and Logistics
Service Providers (LSPs), OTM creates an information bridge across functional
silos, geographic regions, languages, currencies, and business units.
• Combining ease of use with sophisticated and broad logistics functionality,
OTM supports customers with basic transportation needs as well as those with
highly complex logistics requirements.
Simple IOT Architecture
Simple IOT Architecture – With OTM
IOT Solution Benefits
For OTM integrated
Logistics
IOT Solution benefits – Improved Visibility

• You can add IOT devices to regular shipping container/pallets and track real
time cargo movement.
• Real time cargo condition monitoring.
• Detection of theft or misuse.
• IOT enabled SMART label to track each individual item.
• Rea-time fleet management.
• Monitoring cargo integrity
IOT Solution benefits – Increased Efficiency

• By using optimized IOT data, warehouse operation can be planned with much
higher efficiency.
• Ensure accurate inventory control by automated scanning of inbound and
outbound items.
• Optimize workload by connected warehouse and equipment
IOT Solution benefits – Better Customer
Experience

• Real time shipment update for customers.

• Complete visibility into shipment cost and related analytics.
Required Technology
to Enable IOT
Typical Technology Set

• REST APIs for integration with OTM:

OTM has many available REST APIs for integration of IOT platform to on-prem or cloud
deployment.
• Web services and middleware solutions for connectivity of IOT and legacy
applications.
• API monitoring and visibility capability.
• IOT Application development tools.
• Use of existing database and Datawarehouse capability.
Typical Technology Set

Sensors:
Hardware those will be attached to assets and it generated electronic signal from
predefined events.

IOT Network:
Signals from sensors are communicated using IOT network.

IOT Standards:
Technical standard to allow interoperability and processing of datasets.

IOT Intelligence:
Capability to analyze IOT data and derive meaningful interactive analytics.
Different Type of commonly used Sensors

Position: Measures position of an object.

Velocity & Acceleration: Speed and motion sensors.

Force: Measures any external impact and can analyze if the impact force is
beyond threshold.

Humidity: Detects amount of water vapor in air or mass.

Temperature: Measures amount of heat or cold.

Technology Challenges:

Interoperability:
The IOT sensor system should work with existing IT infrastructure without
requirement for heavy technology investment.

Security of Sensor data:

Companies should do proper ground work related to security of sensor data.
Sensor’s low processing power and low available memory creates additional
challenge for security provisioning.
There is no secret for
implementation of IOT
integrated Logistics
(With OTM)
Success Criteria for IOT in Logistics -
Technology
• Creation and management of intelligent asset network connected to different
supply chain nodes.
• Strong collaboration and participation among high level players within the
supply chain,
• Common willingness to invest in IOT technology.
• Interoperability and exchange of efficient sensor data.
Success Criteria for IOT in Logistics –
Organizational Factors
• A clear understanding of the logistics business strategy to confirm that IoT-enabled
solutions are consistent with organization strategy.

• A willingness to rapidly “test and fail and improve “in order to find the right mix of
solutions and capabilities.

• Alignment and collaboration between IT, Supply Chain, Operations, Logistics, Finance
and other important stake holders.

• Strong Data governance and Privacy Policy.

• Identification and recruitment of resources.

• Adoption of Agile development methodology to improve deployment times new IOT

functionality.
Phased
Implementation
Approach
Phased Approach – One Step at a Time

• Identify where to Start – You can’t boil the entire ocean at once.

• Define your options - Which Partners, which business units, which

department?

• Identify resources (Employees and/or Consulting Partners).

• Start with basic prototype or MVP (Minimum Viable Product).

• Measure the outcome of prototype and analyze the challenges.

• Plan for bigger rollout (Keeping in mind experience from previous phase).
