HYDRODYNAMICS: WHEN WATER

STARTS TO FLOW
LECTURE MARCH 09, 2022
DEFINITION
• Hydrodynamics is the study of water flow
• Useful for:
• understand how water behaves when it flows in pipes and channels
• To answer questions such as:
• What diameter of pipe is needed to supply a village or a town with water?
• How wide and deep must a channel be to carry water from a dam to an irrigation
scheme?
• What kind of pumps may be required and how big must they be?

• Hydrodynamics is more complex than hydrostatics because it must take

account of more factors, particularly the direction and velocity in
which the water is flowing and the influence of viscosity.
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
WATER PIPE LINES OR AQUEDUCTS
CHANNELS OR CANALS

DISCHARGE OF WATER
HYDRODYNAMICS TOOL BOX
EXAMPLE OF USING THE WATER BALANCE EQUATION
• IN A TANK WHERE THE FLOW IS NOT STEADY AS THE FOLLOWING. DETERMINE THE TIME TO FILL A
TANK THAT IS 5 M WIDE, 6 M LONG AND 3 M DEEP, CONSIDERING THE INFLOW AND OUTFLOW
RATES INDICATED.

160 lps

115 lps

SOLUTION: USING THE EQUATION

INFLOW = OUFLOW + RATE OF INCREASE OR DECREASE. IN THIS CASE:
RATE OF INCREASE = INFLOW-OUTFLOW = 160 LPS – 115 LPS = 45 LPS = 0.045 M3PS
THE VOLUMEN OF THE TANK IS = 5M X 6M X 3M = 90 M3
THE TIME TO FILL THE 90 M3 WATER TANK IS: 90 M3/0.045 M3PS = 2000 S = 33.3 MINUTES
EXERCISES (HMWK DUE TODAY BY MIDNIGHT)

1. IN THE FOLLOWING DIAGRAM, DETERMINE THE UNKNOWN

2. IN A TANK 5 M WIDE, 6 M LONG AND 3 M DEEP WHERE THE INFLOW IS 120 LPS AND THE
OUTFLOW IS 80 LPS, DETERMINE THE TIME TO FILL THE TANK.
