QUESTION TAGS (= mini-questions that we often put on the end of a sentence in spoken English).

In question tags, we use an auxiliary verb (have/was/will etc.).

REMEMBER TO DO THE OPOSITE!

If the sentence is AFFIRMATIVE then the TAQ QUESTION is going to be NEGATIVE

If the sentence is NEGATIVE then the TAQ QUESTION is going to be AFFIRMATIVE

REMEMBER NEVER TO USE PROPER NAMES

Examples:

CARLOS won’t come to class/Will HE?

KARLA didn’t do the activity/Did SHE?

Example:

REMEMBER TO ALWAYS USE CONTRACTIONS

She COULD pass the test / COULDN’T he?

REMEMBER TO CHECK THE TENSE OF THE SENTENCE. IF it is (Simple Present, Simple Past, Present Continuous, Past
Continuous, Present Perfect, Past Perfect, Present Perfect Continuous, Past Perfect Continuous, Simple Future, Immediate
Future, etc…)

If the sentence is in present

We use both auxiliaries (do/does) (am/is/are)

Examples:

 She is your best friend/Isn’t she?

 He always wakes up at 7:00/doesn’t he?

If the sentence is in past

We use both auxiliaries (did) (was/were)

Examples:

 She was your best friend/Wasn’t she?

 He always woke up at 7:00/Didn’t he?

Exceptions:
The indefinite subjects (someone/somebody/anyone/anybody/everybody/everyone/nobody/no one)

In simple present are considered third person singular

“In QUESTION TAGS have to be considered plural as “THEY”

Examples:

 SOMEONE was in the classroom/Weren’t THEY?

 EVERYBODY delivered the project on time/Didn’t THEY?

The VERB TO BE (FIRST PERSON)

Example:

AFFIRMATIVE:
I’m your best friend AREN’T I?

When the sentence is AFFIRMATIVE “ARE” must be used instead of AM”

Example:

NEGATIVE:
I’m not astudent Am I?

When the sentence is NEGATIVE “nothing has to be changed”

Modals
ONLY THE MODALS WHICH CAN BE CONTRACTED CAN BE USED IN TAG QUESTIONS

When using the modals (can-CAN’T/could-COULDN’T/may/might/will-WON’T/would-WOULDN’T/must-MUSTNT/should-

SHOULDN’T)

Examples:

You’LL study for the beautiful test WON’T you?

They MUST present the beautiful test MUSTN’T they?

Let’s go

When the imperative expression for offerings “LET’S GO” shows up in the sentence
“SHALL” MUST BE USED

LET’S GO home! SHALL WE?

REMEMBER: The expression “let’s go” is plural and the subject is iNVOLVED in the so called expression so “WE” is always
used.

The negative expresions

Nobody
No one
Never
Nothing
No
Hardly

REMEMBER: Everytime you see this expressions in the “tag questions” context.
They affect the sentence making it NEGATIVE so the “taq question” HAS TO BE AFFIRMATIVE

She HARDLY studied for the exam DID she?

NOBODY have presented the SELLI test before! HAVE they?

SO ALWAYS CHECK FOR:

 the tense of the sentence (whether is in present, past, future etc.)

 If the sentence is negative or affirmative
 Look out for the exceptions
 Always use contractions
 Never use proper names (Karl/he) (Andrea/she) (Karl and Andrea/they)
