What is Self-Awareness?

self-awareness is the skill to understand that the self is separate from others; however, to be self-
aware, a person must be able to know and label their own feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. If a person
is self-aware, they can assess their own physical, mental, and emotional states and understand there are
many features of their inside character that allow them to relate with the outside world. A person who
thinks about their state of mind and needs is presentation signs of self-awareness. Self-awareness tells
that a person is separate from others regarding opinions, wants, and needs. self-awareness allows a
person to answer the following problems:

• Who am I?

• What do I want now or in the near future?

• What next should I take?

• What do I think about a specific topic or situation?

• How do I react (physically and emotionally) right now?

If a person is able to answer these questions, it shows they are self-aware because they understand
their physical and emotional needs in connection to the world around them. Being able to answer these
questions includes the self-awareness definition and the self-awareness meaning. Self-awareness
happens through the various areas listed below:

• Sensory Information: Judging the five senses (taste, touch, smell, hear, feel)

• Thoughts: Examining the self and the world created on beliefs, norms, opinions, etc.

• Feelings: Decoding what a person is feeling and labeling that emotion

• Actions: Looking at past and present behaviors/experiences while assessing future promises and
plans

• Wants: Identifying the desires of the self-against others

Using these five parts, humans control how they feel and why, causing them to be self-aware. When a
human becomes self-aware, they are able to make decisions regarding anything.

What is Self-Recognition?

The self-recognition definition states that a person has the ability to understand they exist and that they
are different and/or separate from others around them. This holds true for self-awareness, too;
however, self-awareness is different in that it showcases the feelings and understanding of the self,
along with knowing the self is a separate entity from others who also have their own lives, wants, and
needs. To get to a place of self-awareness, one must first possess self-recognition.
