Data Table 1.1 Exposure to Light (10 points)

Time(mins) Cup 1 Cup 2 Cup 3
(Detergent (Baking Soda (Water)
solution) solution)
3 minutes Nothing changed Nothing changed Nothing changed
6 minutes 1 disc gone up Discs are slowly 5 discs still at the
moving to the side bottom
9 minutes 1 more disc has gone Nothing happened Nothing new
up
12 minutes Remain like that No change Still the same
15 minutes Still like that No chnge Still the same

Data Table 1.2 No Light (10 points)

Time(mins) Cup 1 Cup 2 Cup 3
(Detergent (Baking Soda (Water)
solution) solution)
3 minutes Nothing changed Nothing changed Nothing changed
6 minutes The discs go to the The discs that have Nothing changed
side but the one been sinking a while
sank, stays in the ago started to go up
middle
9 minutes One sank at the Discs started to Nothing changed
middle change color because
of baking soda.
12 minutes The same Nothing changed Nothing changed
15 minutes There are bubbles No disc is left at the 3 discs go down
coming from the disc bottom

Questions:
1. How does the detergent help the leaf disks to sink?
PERFORMANCE TASKS PHOTOSYNTHESIS
NO.2.2 PHOTOSYNTHESIS
- Molecules of the leaf broke down because of the soap, and that allows bicornate to penetrate
cells.

2. Why don't the leaf disks soaking in the water (control)

float?
- Oxygen that is accumulated during cellular respiration will be consumed by photosynthesis
causing the discs to sink.

3. What is the purpose of the baking soda solution?

- It acted as carbon dioxide that is needed to start photosynthesis.

4. What is the purpose of the light reaction?

- It is to provide needed energy to produce glucose using water and carbon dioxide
(photosynthesis).

5. Why do the leaf disks in the baking soda solution (treatment)

begin to float?
- because baking soda acted as carbon dioxide, so the discs already have the requirements to
start photosynthesis and oxygen is a byproduct of it that forms the bubbles.

6. Why do the leaves begin to sink again in the dark?

- because, it loses the source of its energy

7. Why don't the leaves in the baking soda solution continue to

produce oxygen in the dark?
- because it can’t continue the photosynthetic process which requires energy from the light. And
maybe it releases the waste from calvin cycle already.

8. If the light-independent reaction can run without light, why

does oxygen production (and presumably glucose production) stop?
- maybe it didn’t have enough energy to move to calvin cycle and plants need light photons to
continue processing things.
