Activity 5: Sugar Crystals, Rock Candy!

Name: PUNDAVELA, ANGELICA F. Date Performed: Nov. 7, 2021

Section & Schedule: CEAT-09-101E (4:30pm - 6:00pm) Date Submitted: Nov. 14, 2021

● 6 cups sugar (cane, white) 3 cups water (drinking water) food color (optional)
● 1 Cup Measuring Cup
● 3 Drinking Glasses/ clear container
● 3 Pencils or Coffee Stirrers
● 3 8 Inch Strings
● 3 Paper Clips
● 1 Stirring Spoon
● 1 Tablespoon Measuring Spoon
● Tea Kettle or Large Microwaveable Bowl
● Masking Tape
● Stove to Heat Water

Procedure:
1. Primarily, you are to prepare a sugar solution using varying sugar to water concentrations- a) 3
cups sugar + 1 cup water; b) 2 cups sugar + 1 cup water; c) 1 cup sugar + 1 cup water.
2. Measure the sugar and put it in 3 separate drinking glass or container. (Do not use plastic
containers!)
3. Boil the water and add it to the measured sugar.
4. The graphic procedure that follows describes the next steps that you must do.
5. Make sure that at the end of the activity, you have prepared three sugar solutions of different
concentration.
6. Label the containers to avoid confusion.
7. Leave the setup in an undisturbed place. Check the setup from time to time and record your
observations. Take note of the time when the first crystal formations are observed. Record at least
5 observations.
8. Document the experiment by taking pictures.

1. Which of the setup formed crystals the first?

 The setup that first formed crystals is setup A.

2. Which of the setup formed crystals the last?

 The setup that last formed crystals is setup B and C.

D. Analysis & Conclusion (____/15 points)

1. Why do you think did one set-up formed crystals faster than the others?
 Setup A formed crystals faster than the others because it has a higher amount of
dissolve materials (the sugar) in the water and the pressure that hold itself.

2. What type of crystal structure was seen in the experiment? Describe briefly.
 The crystal that forms in the yarn are like a small rectangular or cube that are stock
on top of each other.

3. What is the relationship of concentration to crystal formation? Explain using experimental

results
 The higher amount of dissolve materials in the water the bigger the crystal will grow
and the fastest crystal forms.
