UNBELIEVABLE! WHAT IS HAPPENING TO IVY LEAGUE AND LACS?
For nearly a decade, school admissions officers
have applied preferential policies to "legacy"
candidates, whose parents or grandparents studied
and graduated at that same university. The school
applies this system because they believe that if a
student's parents receive education from their
parents, they will obviously meet the school's
standards. In addition, the “legacy preference”
can help the school receive more money from
“legacy” families, and that money will be used
for financial aid programs for other needy
students. However, many Ivy League take
advantage of this factor in order to gain donations
from such alumnus. It can be seen from the
recent statistics that The University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and 4 other Ivy League
Universities possess an unbelievable percentage
of legacy admission rate of nearly 40%!!! While
the normal rate is just under 10%. Is this consider
as an unfair advantage to the “no-legacy”
students?
In addition, recent investigation further depicts
the picture behind US News Ranking for LACs
colleges, including Washington and Lee
University, Wake Forest University, Penn State
University and UNC Chapel Hill. Given the fact
that the involved universities has been finding
solutions to ease the problems, including working
on a committee directive and publishing media
statement, that is not enough to solve the root of
the problem.
As a Member of the US College, The University
of Southern California is fully aware of its
responsibility to help our fellow colleges to solve
the problem. USC would give some suggestions,
including but not limited to: Acknowledges
admitted students who have a relationship with
donors and/or alumni have academic credentials
roughly comparable with all admitted students.
No donor or alumni relationship guarantees an
applicant’s admission. An unqualified applicant,
even one with a relationship to donors and/or
alumni, will not be offered admission. USC is
also impressed by the ally LACs’solutions for
resolving the ranking scandal. USC would really
looking forward to a final resolution from the
whole ally committee.
