Week 1
Comprehension

Task 1: Practice Sheet 1

Text A, Part 1

Koalas
The koala is native to Australia. They are found in eucalyptus forests and
woodlands. Wild koalas are found in the eastern states of Queensland, New South
Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Koalas are often incorrectly called ‘koala
bears’. They are actually marsupials, which means they carry their young in a
pouch. A baby koala is called a joey. Joeys are born blind and earless. They 5
resemble a pink jelly bean. After giving birth, a female koala carries her baby in
her pouch for about six months.
The joey is a fully-grown koala by about four years old. On average, koalas live
to ten or twelve years of age. Koalas have a thick coat of woolly, grey fur with a
cream-coloured chest. They have a wide, rounded nose; small yellow eyes and 10
large, fluffy ears. Koalas have sharp claws which they use to help them climb
trees.

Text A, Part 2

They have five digits (fingers) on each front paw, with two of them acting like
thumbs. This helps them to hold firmly on to the branches and to grip their food.
Koalas are herbivores (plant eaters). They are one of the only mammals that can 15
survive on a diet of eucalyptus leaves. Koalas do not need to consume much
water. Instead, they get most of their moisture from eating eucalyptus leaves.

Deforestation occurs when a wide range of trees are cleared or destroyed. The
eucalyptus forests and woodlands of Australia’s east coast are disappearing
quickly. Around 80% of koala habitat has already been cleared construction of 20
human homes. Drought and forest fires have also resulted in the loss of the
koala’s natural habitat.

Text B

A bulb is a blob of plant food from which a plant can grow.

They look a bit like an onion, but make sure you don’t eat one, it would give you a very
poorly tummy!
Why not have a go at planting your own bulb?

How to plant a bulb

You will need…

• a bulb
• soil
• plant pot
• a trowel or little gardening fork
• a watering can
• water

Instructions:

Ask an adult to help you with Steps 1 and 4.

1. Preparing your plant pot

Fill the plant pot about half full of soil. If you are planting outside, use your trowel
to dig a little hole. Different bulbs need to be planted at different depths, as ask a
grown up to help you work out how deep your hole should be.

2. Placing bulb in the pot

Put a little hole about the size of your bulb in the soil and then gently put the
bulb in the hole. Then cover the bulb with soil and lightly pat it down.

3. Watering the pot

Give it a finishing touch by watering the area around the soil.

4. Caring for your bulb

Looking after bulb is very easy. All they need is water, air, and sunlight.
You need to spray them lightly with water. (A grown up can tell you how
often to do this.)

become bored and to amuse himself, he would call out, “Wolf! Wolf!” although there was
no wolf about.

The villagers would stop what they were doing and would run to save the sheep from the
wolf. Once they arrived at the pasture, the boy just laughed wickedly, “Ha! Ha! Ha! What 5
a fool I have made of all of you!” The naughty boy played this joke over and over until the
villagers grew tired of him.

One day while the boy was watching the sheep, an actual wolf did come into the field. The
boy cried, “Help! Help! Is anybody there?” No one came. The wolf had a feast of sheep
that day and the notorious boy learned his lesson well.
