life?
1. Height and Weight ( Stunted growth, underweight, overweight, obesity)
Stunted growth means, the normal growth rate in a person has been
reduced. This is due to malnutrition in early childhood. It is learned
that when the vital organs are not fully developed during childhood,
premature death in later life can result.
Weight Issues Body Weight Body Mass

15% to 20%
below normal for
the age and height
group
Overweight & Increased body weight Weight is 15% to
Obesity in relation to height. 20% above
Defined as ''abnormal or normal for the
excessive fat age and height
accumulation that group
presents a risk to health.

1. Cerumen or earwax when pushed against the eardrum by cotton

2. Hearing-related buds or by hairpins block the ear canal and causes hearing problems.
problems 2. When water is trapped in the ears, bacteria or fungal organisms in
(impacted cerumen, the water will most likely spread in the inner ear area. The result is a
swimmer’s ear, painful condition called swimmer’s ear, which results from
otitis media) infection. This condition needs to be treated at once by a doctor.
3. Otitis media is common in children because the tube that allows
fresh air in the middle ear is not yet fully developed compared with
adults. Children experience middle ear infections when they have
viral or bacterial infection caused by common cold.

3. Vision Astigmatism is a common eye condition experienced by many

(astigmatism, myopia, young people. This condition can be corrected by eyeglasses. The
Hyperopia) exact cause is not fully known.
Nearsightedness, or myopia has become common lately.
Nearsighted persons can see objects that are close but have
problems seeing objects that are far. The exact cause for the
increasing number of those who have myopia is not fully known.
However, many eye doctors would say that it has something to do
with eye fatigue from computer use.
Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is also a common vision problem.
People with hyperopia can see objects that are far, but have
difficulty focusing on objects that are close.
Farsighted people sometimes have headaches or eyestrain and may
feel tired when reading at close range.
4. Skin, hair, and nail Sunburn is caused when the skin is exposed to the sun for a period
(sunburn, dandruff, of time. The skin burns, turns red, and will be irritated. Sunburn can
corns, blisters, cause skin cancer and deadly melanoma.
calluses, and ingrown Dandruff is marked by flaking or drying of the skin on the scalp. It
toenails) is itchy sometimes, that’s why it makes a person feel uncomfortable.
It is not contagious but it can be embarrassing.
Corns and calluses are thick, hardened layers of skin on the hands
and fingers and especially on toes and feet. They grow when these
parts of your body are rubbed against hard surfaces.
Ingrown toe nail results when a nail is curved and grows into the
skin usually at the sides of the nail. It is caused by improper
trimming and improper size of a footwear. It can also be caused by
fungal infection.

5. Posture and Spine Scoliosis is the sideways curving of the spine. This takes place most
Disorders often just before puberty during the growth spurt. Children who
(scoliosis, lordosis) have a mild case of scoliosis
should be monitored
closely.

Lordosis is a condition when the spine in the lower back has curved
excessively. This can cause pain as the spine is pressured in excess.

6. Oral/Dental Cavities occur as a result of tooth decay. Tooth decays when the
problems tooth structure is destroyed. This can be prevented by proper
(cavities, gingivitis, brushing of the teeth.
malocclusion, Gingivitis is a gum disease. The bacterial growth in the mouth will
halitosis) cause destruction of the tissue surrounding the teeth. Eventually, the
result is tooth loss.
Malocclusion is another word for misalignment of the teeth. Other
words for the condition is crowded teeth. This condition may cause
health problems if not addressed properly.
Bad breath or halitosis is caused by certain foods and poor dental

Enrichment: (Think-Pair-Share)
Directions: This activity provides you with the opportunity to carefully think, formulate, and
talk about what you have learned.
Steps:
1. THINK:
a. How does personal health relate to you?
b. Why does it matter to know about personal health?

2. PAIR: You will work with a partner. During this time, take turns sharing ideas with your
partner. Compare each other’s ideas and arrive at the best possible and most interesting
answer.

3. SHARE: You will share your answers to the class.
