Personal Health Issues and Concerns

1. STUNTED GROWTH – is a reduced growth rate in human

development. It is a primary manifestation of malnutrition
(or more precisely under nutrition) and recurrent infections,
such as diarrhea and helminthiasis, in early childhood and
even before birth, due to malnutrition during fetal
development brought on by a malnourished mother.
 UNDERWEIGHT- is a term describing a person whose body
weight is considered too low to be healthy.
 OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY- are defined as ''abnormal or
excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health''
2. IMPACTED CERUMEN - Ear wax, also called cerumen, is
made by the body to protect the ears. The ear wax has
both lubricating and antibacterial properties. Most of the
time, the old ear wax is moved through the ear canal by
motions from chewing and other jaw movements and as
the skin of the ear canal grows from the inside out. At that
time, it reaches the outside of the ear and flakes off. Ear

3

wax is produced in the outer part of the ear canal, not

deep inside the ear.
3. SWIMMER’S EAR- Otitis externa, also known as swimmer's
ear, [1] is an inflammation of the ear canal.[2] It often
presents with ear pain, swelling of the ear canal, and
occasionally decreased hearing.[2] Typically there is pain
with movement of the outer ear. A high fever is typically
not present except in severe cases.
4. OTITIS MEDIA- is a group of inflammatory diseases of the
middle ear.[2] The two main types are acute otitis media
(AOM) and otitis media with effusion (OME).[6] AOM is an
infection of abrupt onset that usually presents with ear
pain. In young children this may result in pulling at the ear,
increased crying, and poor sleep. Decreased eating and a
fever may also be present. OME is typically not associated
with symptoms.[1] Occasionally a feeling of fullness is
described. It is defined as the presence of non-infectious
fluid in the middle ear for more than three months.
5. BLURRED VISION- refers to eye movement control and eye
coordination. Something that is hazy and indistinct to the
sight. ASTIGMATISM- is a type of refractive error in which
the eye does not focus light evenly on the retina.[1] This
results in distorted or blurred vision at all distances. MYOPIA
- Near-sightedness, also known as short-sightedness and
myopia, is a condition of the eye where light focuses in
front of, instead of on, the retina.[1] This causes distant
objects to be blurry while close objects appear normal.
6. HYPEROPIA- Far-sightedness, also known as long-
sightedness and hyperopia, is a condition of the eye in
which light is focused behind, instead of on, the retina.[2]
This causes close objects to be blurry, while far objects may
appear normal.
7. XEROPHTHALMIA- is a medical condition in which the eye
fails to produce tears. It may be caused by vitamin A

deficiency, which is sometimes used to describe that

condition, although there may be other causes.
8. STRABISMUS- also called crossed eyes is a condition in
which the eyes do not properly align with each other
when looking at an object.
9. SUNBURN- is a form of radiation burn that affects living
tissue, such as skin, that results from an overexposure to
ultraviolet (UV) radiation, commonly from the sun. CORNS-
an in growing callus often on the foot
10. BLISTERS- is a small pocket of body fluid (lymph, serum,
plasma, blood, or pus) within the upper layers of the skin,
typically caused by forceful rubbing (friction), burning,
freezing, chemical exposure or infection
11. SCOLIOSIS - is a medical condition in which a person's
spine has a sideways curve.
12. LORDOSIS- refers to the normal inward lordotic curvature
of the lumbar and cervical regions of the human spine
13. KYPHOSIS- is an abnormally excessive convex kyphotic
curvature of the spine as it occurs in the cervical, thoracic
and sacral regions.
14. CAVITIES- are damage to the structure of a tooth.
15. GINGIVITIS- "inflammation of the gum tissue") is a non-
destructive disease that occurs around the teeth.
16. PERIODONTITIS- also known as gum disease and
pyorrhea, is a set of inflammatory diseases affecting the
tissues surrounding the teeth.
17. MALOCCLUSION-is a misalignment or incorrect relation
between the teeth of the two dental arches when they
approach each other as the jaws close.
18. HALITOSIS- also known as bad breath is a symptom in
which a noticeably unpleasant odor is present on the

Demonstrate Self-management Skills

What are self-management skills?

Self-management skills are the abilities that allow people

to control their thoughts, feelings and actions. If you have
strong self-management skills, you’re able to set
goals independently and take the initiative to achieve
them. Purposeful self-management can help you direct
the trajectory of your career and ensure you seek
opportunities that get you closer to your goals.

Examples of self-management skills

Self-management skills focus on personal responsibility in

the following areas:

 Organization
 Goal setting
 Time management
 Self-motivation
3

 Stress management
 Accountability

Organization

You can apply your organizational skills to your time,

physical space, energy and mental capabilities to
establish neatness and improve functionality. If you are
well-organized, you’re able to plan, prioritize and execute
important activities, helping you self-manage your
essential workplace responsibilities.

Goal setting

Goal setting is the ability to determine what you want to

achieve in a clear and well-defined manner. Goal setting
in the workplace helps you to decide what’s important
and to create an action plan that will help you achieve
goals that align with those values. This skill is necessary to
maintain productivity in the workplace because it
enables you to manage your time and actions.

Time management

Strong time management skills allow you to prioritize tasks,

avoid distractions and maintain focus. Effective time
management in the workplace helps with setting and
meeting deadlines, working on one thing at a time and
delegating responsibilities appropriately. Managing your
time is an essential part of managing yourself.

Examples

Self-motivation

Self-motivation is the ability to take initiative and finish

tasks you know should be completed. When you’re self-
motivated, you anticipate and plan for potential tasks
needed to achieve more significant assignments or to
solve ongoing issues. You’re driven by your desire to
succeed and not by outside factors, which makes you
more productive in the workplace. Self-motivation is the
side of self-management that ensures forward progress
with your projects and activities.

Stress management

Stress management can take many forms, from

maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen to
proactively engaging in activities like meditation or
journaling about your experiences. Proactively managing
workplace stressors can help you remain calm on the job.
Handling stress before it becomes an issue allows you to
focus on your goals and make steady progress forward.
Managing stress helps you self-manage your emotions
and maintain a professional demeanor in the workplace.

Accountability

Accountability is the act of taking personal ownership of

your thoughts and actions. When you maintain
responsibility, you’re better equipped to evaluate your
work and determine the best way to proceed.

How to improve self-management skills

Enhance your self-management skills by actively focusing

on ways you can direct, evaluate and improve upon your
daily tasks. Here are a few ways you can improve your
self-management skills:

1. Assess your strengths. Determine what professional

tasks you’re best at, and focus on ways to maximize
your abilities in these areas. Understanding your
strengths helps you manage your career path in a
way that makes the most of skills like coding,
technical writing, graphic design or customer service.
2. Prioritize your responsibilities. Clearly define which
responsibilities are most important, and focus your
attention on the most critical jobs, avoiding
distractions that draw you away from what matters.
3. Develop organizational systems. Find effective
methods that help you manage your time, streamline
your daily activities and keep important items in easy-
to-find places. This step might include using an
agenda book, setting up a time-management app
on your phone or creating a filing system at your
desk.
4. Create strict deadlines. Assign deadlines to each
stage of a project, and maintain your schedule. Hold
yourself accountable for getting tasks done on or
ahead of schedule by committing to putting in more
hours when needed to reach your self-designated
checkpoints.
5. Perform one task at a time. Focus your time, energy
and abilities on a single task at any given moment.
Complete each task fully before moving on to

another so that you’re managing your time and

effort efficiently.
6. Practice patience. Maintain a sense of calm so you
can think clearly and objectively. Be considerate of
others, and try to empathize with their needs and
experiences to more effectively help them.
7. Take care of your health and wellness. Maintain a
proper diet, exercise regularly, care for your personal
hygiene and actively focus on lowering your stress
levels. Take breaks to stretch and clear your mind,
keep healthy snacks at work and look for
opportunities for physical activity, such as a brisk walk
on your lunch hour.
8. Evaluate your progress. Objectively assess the
progress you’ve made toward your goals by setting
checkpoints along the way and tracking your
accomplishments to see if you’ve met them. Ask a
mentor for assistance to get a well-rounded
appraisal. Use this feedback to improve your self-
management going forward.

 Height and weight measurement –. It is used to calculate

your body mass index, or BMI, a measure of healthy versus
unhealthy weight. They are important when tracking a child’s
growth.
Regular gain in weight is a sign of health and proper
methods of weighing and measuring are important. Regular
weighing should be done once a month, on the same day,
and at the same time while, the measuring of height should
be done at least twice during the school year. The student
stand in the middle of the platform, hands on the sides, and
the weight should be recorded to the nearest quarter of a
pound.

 Vision screening – Effective method to identify children with

visual impairment or eye conditions that are likely to lead to
vision loss so that a referral can be made to an appropriate
eye care professional for further evaluations and treatments.
Children need to receive an eye exam by an eye doctor in
clinical setting that can detect issues with distance vision,
close vision, color detection, and binocular. This is done with
use of the Snellen chart. The Snellen test detects the loss of
visual activity in a screening. The e- chart is useful for the little
children and illiterates. The child indicates which way the
letter points.

 Scoliosis test – This is a simple screening test that can detect

potential problems. If you notice any unevenness, you should
contact your Doctor for an exam. Scoliosis is usually
confirmed by the X-ray of the entire spine looking from front
to back.

Health professionals maintain health in humans through the

application of the principles and procedures of evidence-based
medicine and caring. Health professionals study, diagnose, treat
and prevent human illness, injury and other physical and mental
impairments in accordance with the needs of the populations

they serve. They advise on or apply preventive and curative

measures and promote health with the goal of meeting the health
needs and expectations of individuals and populations and
improving population health outcomes. They also conduct
research and improve or develop concepts, theories and
operational methods to advance evidence-based health care.

Health-care facilities are hospitals, primary health care centers,

isolation camps, burn patient units, feeding centers and others. In
emergency situations, health-care facilities are often faced with
an exceptionally high number of patients, some of whom may
require specific medical care (e.g. treatment of chemical
poisonings). - World Health Organization

Here are some examples of community health care facilities:

1. Hospital - A hospital's primary task is to provide short-term

care for people with severe health issues resulting from injury,
disease or genetic anomaly. Open 24 hours a day, seven
days a week, hospitals bring together physicians in assorted
specialties, a highly skilled nursing staff, various medical
technicians, health care administrators and specialized
equipment to deliver care to people with acute and chronic
health conditions. Many hospitals offer a wide range of
services, including emergency care, scheduled surgeries,
labor and delivery services, diagnostic testing, lab work, and
patient education.

2. Ambulatory Surgical Center - Some surgeries are too

complex to be done safely in a doctor's office but simple
enough that patients generally do not require hospital care

after undergoing them. Ambulatory surgical centers are

often a less expensive option than a hospital.

3. Doctor's Office - A doctor's office is a medical facility where

one or more doctors provide treatment to patients. Doctor's
offices are often focused on one type of medicine; the
health providers operating there are either general
practitioners or practice a common specialty. Doctor's
offices provide routine care as well as treatment for acute
conditions that do not require immediate intervention.

4. Urgent Care Clinic – It sometimes called walk-in clinics, these

facilities offer outpatient care immediately. However, it is
important to note that an urgent care clinic is not the same
as a hospital's emergency room. If the issue is something that
you would normally see your doctor for like a stomach virus
or a sprained ankle, then an urgent care clinic is
appropriate. If you have a complex health situation or your
issue is a true medical emergency like chest pain, breathing
difficulties, broken bones or an extremely high fever, then
you should head to the hospital's emergency room without
delay.

5. Nursing Home - A nursing home is designed for patients who

require constant care but do not need to be hospitalized
and cannot be cared for at home. Often associated with
seniors who require custodial care in a residential facility. A

5

physician, skilled nurses and therapists are on staff to oversee

and provide medical care, assistance with medications, and
services like physical, speech and occupational therapy. In
addition, the nursing home's staff offers help with basic tasks
that can be challenging for individuals with health issues,
including feeding, bathing and dressing.
