Quarter 1 Module 1: Discusses the concept
that art processes, elements and principles
still apply even with the use of new
technologies (A6EL-la)

DISCUSSES THE CONCEPT THAT ART PROCESSES,

ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES STILL APPLY EVEN WITH
THE USE OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES

LET US KNOW

Look at the pictures below. One of the pictures was created

by computer and the other was drawn by hand. Can you tell which
is which? Write down your thoughts in your notebook about the
following questions.
1. How are the drawings similar and how are they different?
2. How were the elements and principles applied in each
drawing?

LET US REVIEW

Identify what element of arts is being shown in the pictures.

Write your answer on the blank below the pictures.

LET US STUDY

Have you ever tried using a computer software to draw

something?
Although most software are expensive, there are those that
you can download for free. Once you use them, you will find out
that most features that allow you to create lines and shapes, and
change these lines to think lines, and vice versa are common. You
can even erase and do it over again.

Basic Drawing Tools

 The Pencil Tool is used
to draw free lines onto
the picture.

to fill an area with a
solid color or pattern.
 The Square Tool is used
to create a perfect

There are different
shapes and sizes such
as circles or rectangles
that can be selected.
 Erasing Tools provide
several different ways
to erase various parts,
or all, of your drawing.
Erasing Tool For example, the
popular stick of
dynamite would cause
the entire image to

black and white
concentric circles.
 The Dye Tool is used to
pick out colors already
used somewhere in the
canvas.

You will notice that you can create all the elements of art such
as lines, shapes, color, and texture using the tools available in most
drawing software. By practicing you can become better at it and
create digital art much like the way you do it in traditional art.

LET US PRACTICE

Using the Magic Slate program, draw the following

elements:

1. Straight lines (horizontal, vertical, diagonal)

2. Curved lines (spiral, wavy, swirl)
3. Geometric shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, and square) in
different sizes.
 You can use other devices such as a tablet or a laptop
with a drawing software that you are familiar with to work
on this exercise.
 Print your work and paste it on the back of your
worksheets. If computer and other devices are not
available, use a pen to draw the different lines and
shapes in your worksheets.

LET US REMEMBER

 People can create artworks with the use of computer.

 Digital art is a general term for a wide variety of artistic works
and methods that use digital technology.
 Lines, shapes, colors, and textures, forms are elements common
to both traditional handmade art and modern digital art.
 The principles of art rhythm, harmony, contrast, and emphasis
apply even with the use of technology.

LET US KNOW

In this modern times, the use of computer and internet

have been an essential part of our lives. In this lesson, you will be
introduced to the world of digital art and how and for what it is
used today.
You will also learn some of the common software used
for creating digital art.
With the use of computer and basic software tools, You
can draw and create digital images in the most artistic way
you can.
The lesson will introduce you to the basic principles,
presentation and discussion of the features and basic
drawing software.

Graphic design is the process of

visual communication and
problem-solving through the
use of typography,
photography, iconography
and illustration. The field is
considered a subset of visual
communication and
communication design, but
sometimes the term "graphic
design" is used synonymously.
Graphic designers create and combine symbols, images and text
to form visual representations of ideas and messages.

Digital art is an artistic

work or practice that uses
digital technology as part of
the creative or
presentation process.
Since the 1960s, various
names have been used to
describe the process,
including computer art
and multimedia art. Digital
art is itself placed under
the larger umbrella term
new media art.

LET US STUDY

Set the equipment and tools in art skills using new technologies
like hardware and software. Setting your own artwork from paper to computer
is known as digitally formatting your art. To bring the artwork from paper to
computer you need basic pieces of hardware like: computer, scanner, digital
tablet and stylus.
a. Computer  –  you  need  a  computer  and  operating  system  to  run  on  to
create a digital painting. It is important that your computer is powerful
enough  to  run  software  programs.  Having  as  much  Random  Access
Memory  (RAM)  as  you  can  is  a  feature  to  consider  in  successful  digital
painting.
The  more  stored  application  programs  and  operating  system  your
computer has, the faster it can process things ‐like computer command
as example.
b. Scanner – it is absolutely essential to digital painting. Without one, you
cannot digitize your artwork. It is also useful for scanning textures – like
real  canvass  and  water  color  paper  –  to  make  texture  supports
(paper/canvass, etc.) or patterns which you can apply as backgrounds for
paintings.
c. Digital  Tablet  and  Stylus  –  a  real‐world  brush  changes  the  way  it
deposits  paint  when  its  shape  changes.  Push  down  on  a  brush  tip  and
spread out the bristles. Make the stroke larger and the shape changes.
Tilt  brush  and  again  the  shape  changes,  depositing  paint  in  a  different

way.  These  features  can  now  be  done  with  varying  degrees  of  success
using  a  pen  stylus  (pen  tool)  to  make  marks  and  digital  tablet  to
communicate directions to the computer.

  LOGO DESIGN
To understand what a logo is, we must first understand what the
main  purpose  of  logo  is.  The  design  process  must  aim  to  make  the  logo
immediately recognizable, trustworthy, admirable, loyal and superior. The logo
is  one  aspect  of  a  company’s  commercial  brand  or  economic  entity,  and  its
shapes,  colors,  fonts  and  images  usually  strikingly  different  from  other  logos.
Logos  are  used  to  identify  and  serve  as  a  remarkable  icon  to  a  particular
product or entity.
There are a lots of computer applications that can be used in logo
design  making.  One  of  the  most  used  in  simple  logo  designing  is  Inkshape.
Inkshape  is  a  professional  quality  vector  graphics  software  which  runs  on
Windows,  Mac  OS  X  and  GNU/Linux.  It  is  used  by  design  professionals  and
hobbyist  worldwide,  for  creating  a  wide  variety  of  graphics  such  as
illustrations,  icons,  logos,  diagrams,  maps  and  web  graphics,  and  is  free  and

5 Principles of  Effective Logo Design

An effective logo is distinctive, appropriate, practical, graphic, simple
in form and conveys an intended message. In its simplest, form an
effective logo must follow the five basic principles of logo design:

  Simple
A simple logo design allows for easy recognition. It must
be something catchy to the eye of the viewers and not “overdrawn”.
 Memorable
An effective logo design should be concise and easily to
remember
 Timeless
An effective logo should last its effectivity for a long time.
 Versatile
The logo should work in different media and application.
A minimal number of colors  is recommended to focus more on
the logo concept rather than the color.
 Appropriate
The logo design should derive its meaning and usefulness
from the quality of what it symbolizes.

Safety precautions in Logo Designing

 Familiarize first with proper handling of computer and its
peripherals.
 Avoid eating and drinking inside the work area.
 Work with well‐ventilated area.

Artists  today  who  make  art  with  computer  utilize  software.
Software  technologies  have  the  amazing  capacity  to  assist  artists  in  creating
the kind of art they desire‐ whether for cartooning, animation, illustration, or
game design. This part of the book is about creating a cartoon character.
Even  with  the  use  of  digital  tools,  artists  would  have  to  consider
the  following  elements  of  art:  line,  shape  and  texture  in  understanding  the
activities. This lesson will discuss what these elements are and how they can be
used to give a cartoon character depth and personality.
In addition, useful and easy to follow tips on designing a character
will be presented in this lesson. There are several important considerations in
designing  a  character.  These  include,  among  others,  the  consumers  or  target
audience,  the  environment  in  which  the  character  is  situated,  as  well  as  it’s
character  traits  and  background.  Deciding  on  these  things  at  the  onset,  can

LET US STUDY

There are three elements of art that are very useful in creating
character designs, namely line, shape and texture. They can make the
character look real, project emotions, and show movement.

 Line
The path of moving point made by a tool, instrument, or
medium as it moves across an area is called line. It is usually visible as its
contrasts in value with surroundings. In its 3D form, it can be a string, wire,
tube, and the like.
Lines can be straight or curved, thick or thin. The Type of
line artists use show built‐in associations and subtle psychological suggestions.

Example:
1. Horizontal lines can signify relaxation, lying down, or can make
the subject appear wider.
2. Vertical lines can mean rigid, straight, stable or can make the
subject appear taller.
3. Zigzag lines can convey stress, tension, or instability.
4. Curved lines can show smooth flow, waves, or movement.

Depending on the message the artist wants to express, he or she will use
the appropriate lines in the artwork.

 Color
Color is pigment added to any artwork to bring it to life
and make it more attractive or visually appealing. Artists can choose to color
an artwork according to the actual color of the subject as it appears in real life
or according to his or her own subjective interpretation. A more indepth
discussion on color is provided in Lesson 6.

 Shape

Shape is two‐dimensional figure enclosed by a line.
They only have height and width. There are two kinds of shapes: geometric
and organic shapes. Geometric shapes such as circle, square, rectangle, oblong,
and triangle are man‐made. Organic shapes are shapes found in nature like the
shape of flowers, leaves and the like.
Shapes are the building blocks of an art structure. Artists
can be use different kinds of shapes to create an illusion or depict a reality.
When a shape has a height, width, and depths, it becomes a form. It can also
be geometric or organic.

 Texture
The surface quality of an object is called texture. It can
be felt through touching or having an illusion of touch.

Three kinds of texture:
1. Tactile texture refers to actual or real texture of an object. This
can be felt through touching.
2. Artificial texture is seen in a photograph or artwork that
reminds you of the actual texture of the object.
3. Visual  texture  is  the  illusion  of  having  physical  texture  usually
achieved by the repetition of shapes, lines, and colors.

it not present before‐ using the digital art software available in your
computer.
3. Keep in mind the elements of art and their appropriate uses in
making your character.
4. Give a new name for your character.
5. Print and exhibit your artwork in class.

LET US REMEMBER

The elements of art are applied in digital art as in traditional art.
They can be used to give a character  depth and personality.

LET US APPRECIATE

are unavailable, create a 3D character using cardboard.
  Materials needed:

 Cardboard
 Colored pens or crayons
 Pencil
 Black pen
 Scissors
 Masking tape

Steps to follow:
1. Look for pictures of a character that you wish to draw from your
preferred Internet sites, or in books, and magazines. It can be a
character from your favourite movie or your favorite superhero.
2. Lay the cardboard crosswise and draw the four sides of the character of
your choice in one spread. Start with the left side, then the right side,
and finally, the back side.

3. Color your drawing. Then, use black pen to draw the outlines
          and highlight the details.
     4. Cut out the drawing.
     5. Fold the four sides and secure the ends with tape.
     6. Finalize the color using more vivid colors.

     7. Present your work in class.

LET US KNOW

Where  do  cartoonists  get  their  ideas  to  create  them?  Cartoons
are basically a peek into the lives of the character that habit then. Animation
and character design as an art form is now a big business.
Cartoonists  have  been  creating  amusing  characters  and  fantasy
creatures  for  a  long  time.  Yet  there  is  no  precise  instruction  on  how  cartoon
characters  can  be  invented.  They  happen  intentionally  but  they  need  to  be
modelled on someone, something or types we know well.

LET US STUDY

How  can  one  be  successful  in  creating  cartoon  characters?  Creating
cartoon  characters  is  fun.  To  be  successful,  you  need  to  have  a  good
understanding of the basics of developing them.

Figure  drawing  has  to  be  recognized  as  an  important  aspect  of
cartoonist’s  art.  It  is  essential  to  study  the  figure  in  details.  To  see  how  best
you can manipulate it according to your needs. With each figure, the cartoonist
has  to  incorporate  important  points  such  as  expression,  physical  type  and
decorative details, hands and feet.
Now  that  you  have  studied  the  details,  it  is  time  to  fit  the  process
together into a complete figure. Then do the following steps:
1. Keep on sketching, visualizing ideas in pencil,
2. Keep on making your figure simple,
3. Keep on refining the lines until an outline is created,
4. Keep on making your cartoon relatable, believable and humorous,

Quarter 1 – Module 13:
Explain ideas about the cartoon character
(A6PR‐Ih)

EXPLAIN IDEAS ABOUT THE CARTOON CHARACTER

LET US KNOW

Cartoons are one of the most effective means of communication we
have.
Here we will look at just why cartoons are so effective at communicating
with human beings, and why we are hard‐wired to take their messages on
board ahead of other forms of communication.

LET US REVIEW

In our previous lesson we were able to create our own cartoon by using
different lines, shapes and forms. Now, let us see how imaginative you are in
making your own cartoon.  Draw  three  versions  of  yourself  (toddler,
adolescent, and adult) through cartoons

  Me as a child
Me as an adolescent

Me as an adult

LET US STUDY

Cartoons can convey a message far more quickly than a written notice,
for example. For one thing, you don’t need to be able to read to understand a
cartoon. Let us take a look at this cartoon.

Can you tell why this must be the “Mother of all bad days”?

Cartoons Are Such Effective Communicators
Cartoons  as  effective  communicators  makes  it  an  ideal  medium  to
reach a wide public. Often public service communications will contain cartoons
to illustrate their message, or to underline the written content of the message,
just  to  ensure  that  those  who  are  either  illiterate  or  non‐native  speaking  will
grasp  the  meaning.  Cartoon  will  often  be  picked  up  on  before  the  written
content of a sign, too. The message is conveyed in seconds and without the need
for a lengthy explanation. Conversely, if you have a message you need to convey
with  words,  cartoons  help  to  emphasize  your  message.  They  are  increasingly
being used in school textbooks for this very reason.

3

The Skill of Effective Cartoonist
The skill of the effective cartoonist is not simply the ability to draw
well. It is the ability to distill an idea, or a joke, into few short words and images.
It’s this communication short‐cutting that makes the cartoon carry the message
so effectively.

Often  cartoons  will  use  the  power  of  observational  comedy,  which
again allows the audience to identify with the message. Sometimes a cartoon
will be part of a series, which can help you illustrate the narrative of a talk or
lecture.  This  sort  of  approach  when  it  is  well  done,  will  have  your  audience
actually looking forward to the next stage of the talk, as they wait to see the
next  image  in  the  story.  Human  beings  are  so  hardwired  for  linear  narrative
story‐telling that this can often be the most memorable form of presentation
you can make.

LET US PRACTICE

a  wide  public.  If  you  have  a  message  you  need  to  convey,  cartoons  help  to
emphasize  your  message  and  because  of  these  reasons,  cartoons  are
increasingly being used in school textbooks.
