Are you
sexually
authentic?
As a buzzword, ‘authentic’ has infiltrated everything
from Instagram to parenting. Now, sexual authenticity
is coming to the bedroom. Has faking it had its big finish?
SEPTEMBER 2022 | 43
For a word that claims, by definition, to be centred on the genuine,
‘authentic’ has an uncanny ability to trigger a sceptical eye-roll. Perhaps
it’s the buzzword’s comical overuse in suspiciously inauthentic situations
(see: influencers baring their souls next to a stealth #ad). Then there’s the
preach factor; authenticity pushed as the sure-fire way to raise emotionally
robust kids (authentic parenting), get ahead at work (bringing your full self
to the workplace) and create impact on social media (photo-sharing app
BeReal prohibits edits). Showing up in places prone to glossing over the
truth, authenticity is now talked about in the one remaining arena known
for fakes: the bedroom. The goal? To induce an eye-roll of a different kind.

It was sweet, but it was

of something far more
important: consent.
Adults rarely need to
ask permission – we can
go where we want, when
we want and with whom
we want. Perhaps it’s
no surprise, then, that
consent is often seen as
a one-time conversation
solely about sex.
But the reality is that
consent is a fundamental
aspect of connection –
not just because issues
such as sexual coercion

long-term partnerships,
but because consent is
about communicating

It’s easy to view seeking
permission as asking a
question with a yes or no

for consent should be
‘enthusiastic consent’,

A ‘scaled’ response might

SEPTEMBER 2022 | 61
There are few feelings in life that compare
with the full-body calm that comes after
a well-taught yoga class. With the exception,
perhaps, of a satisfying sexual encounter.
So it may not surprise you to learn that
researchers are connecting the dots.
A study published in The Journal Of Sexual
Medicine found that women who engaged in
a 12-week yoga programme reported higher
levels of desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm
and satisfaction, as well as lower levels of
pain. The idea has infiltrated the digital
realm, too. Last year, a TikTok video by

For Laurie Mintz, a psychology professor 01

I found out the hard way, skincare.
A few years ago, my bathroom cabinets

If you’re used to sporting your natural texture,
a lot of what you’ve learned about taking care of
your curls has probably centred on dreadfully
long wash days and rigid haircare rules that are
specific to your hair type. But what if someone told
you it doesn’t have to be that way – that washing,
detangling and styling your hair needn’t take hours,
nor involve a mini arm workout? And what if you
learned that some of the most common practices
you’ve believed to be rooted in fact are actually
based on fiction? Yes, it’s time to rethink everything.
Because there’s a better, different path. ‘I want
women to know that natural haircare can be simple,’
says Aeleise Ollarvia, curl educator and co-founder
of Black Girl Curls. ‘[It’s] not necessarily easy, but
if you just cleanse, condition and style at regular
intervals with high-quality products and receive
maintenance cuts on schedule, that’s all you need.’
Ahead, a handful of misconceptions – and the habits
to adopt instead for better hair (and scalp) health.
