CO5 : Examine friction in machine elements

Course
Q.N Question BT Marks
Outcome
(a) Draw the curve traced by a point on the circumference of a circle of 40 mm
diameter, which rolls on another circle of 160 mm diameter, for one complete
revolution. Name the curve.
[OR] R CO1 20
(b). Draw the hyperbola when the focus and the vertex are 25 mm apart. Consider
eccentricity as 3/2. Draw a tangent and normal to the curve at a point that is 35 mm
from the focus.
(a). A 90 mm long line PQ, lying in the first quadrant, has its end P in the H.P. and
0 0
end Q in the V.P. The line is inclined at 45 to the H.P. and 30 to the V.P.
Draw its projections.
[OR] R CO2 20
(b). A square plane has one of its corners in the H.P. and its surface is perpendicular
to the V.P. The top view of the plane appears as a rhombus with diagonals 70 mm
and 40 mm long. Draw the projections of the plane.

(a). Draw the elevation, top view and side view of the object shown in figure 1. All
dimensions are in mm.

13. R CO3 20

[OR]
(b). Draw the orthographic projections (front view, top view and side view) of the
following figure.

R CO3 20

(a). A triangular prism base 30 mm side and axis 50 mm long is lying on the H.P on
one of its rectangular faces with its axis inclined at 300 to the V.P. It is cut by a
horizontal section plane at a distance of 12 mm above the ground. Draw its front
view and sectional top view?
15. [OR] R CO5 20
(b). A cylinder of diameter 50 mm and height 75 mm is resting on the ground on its
flat end. It is cut by a sectional plane inclined at 300 to the axis of the cylinder and
passing through a point on the axis at height of 50 mm from the base. Draw the
lateral surface of the bottom part.

16. (a). A cam is to give the following motion to a knife edged follower: (a) Outstroke
during 60° of camrotation (b) Dwell for the next 45° of cam rotation (c) Return
stroke during next 90° of cam rotation and (d) Dwell for the remaining of cam
rotation The stroke of the follower is 40 mm and the minimum radius of the cam is
50 mm. The follower moves with uniform velocity during both the outstroke and
return strokes. Draw the profile of the cam when (a) the axis of the follower passes
through the axis of the cam shaft, and (b) the axis of the follower is offset by CO3,

20 mm from the axis of the cam shaft.
[OR]
(b). A multiplate disc clutch transmits 55 KW of power at 1800 rpm. Coefficient
of friction for the friction surfaces is 0.1. Axial intensity at pressure is not to
exceed 160 KN/m2. The internal radius is 80 mm and is 0.7 times the external
radius. Find the number of plates needed to t ransmit the required torque.
