Introduction
History:

The dept. of Higher Education ; Govt. of Karnataka took a futuristic step ,


and started several P.G courses in a few selected government colleges in
Karnataka in 2007. With his academic vision and enthusiasm, Prof. Srihari, the
joint Director for southern region, department of collegiate education was
instrumental in establishing the PG studies in English in MACW, in the year 2007.

With the financial grants from UGC and State Govt. and academic support
from University of Mysore, the dept. has been able to face the challenges and has
developed into an important centre for higher Education, in the last 5 years.

Vision :

“To become a center of excellence for “women empowerment” by


inculcating literary and communicative skills, Human Resource skills in students
and sensitise them towards social and cultural issues through imparting value-
based higher education”

Mission:

1) To motivate the students to achieve mastery over language and


communication through the prescribed syllabus.
2) To encourage students to participate in creative writing and to write
research papers
3) To empower them to face the professional and academic challenges in
the present global situation.
4) To instill self confidence in the students and train them to become
responsible citizens of the country.

Admission and results: In the first year 2007, 13 students enrolled for M.A. in
English. They passed out with 100% of the students obtaining first class, 25%
getting distinction in results. During the second year 2008, 20 students were
enrolled and the dept. worked to its full capacity. Among the 20 students, 50%
got first class and a student Smt. Sowmya has secured 3rd rank & one Gold medal
at the University level.

In the third year, that is in 2009, 14 students were admitted &


Ms.Akshatha .K.R of the 3rd batch has secured 6th rank at university level & 90 %
have secured first class. In 2010 , the 4th year since its inception, 20 students have
joined the course whose results are awaited.

In the 5th year (in 2011), 22 students have been admitted, due to the increase in
the intake of students to 25.

Co-curricular Activities:
The dept has, from the beginning, refused to compromise with academic
quality. In order to provide value-added extra learning opportunities to the
students, many eminent scholars and subject experts from various fields such as
the famous Wild life Photographers Mr.Krupakar and Senani(the 2010 Green
Oscar award winners) , Prof.Kikkeri Narayan,- well known folklore scholar and
linguist, Prof. O.L. Nagabhushan Swamy- well known Kannada Scholar and
translator, Prof.H.S.Raghavendra Rao- famous Kannada writer and critic ;
Prof .Helen Dwyer-distinguished scholar and poet from Ireland; Prof
C.P.Ravichandra, univ. of Mysore- an authority on Canadian Studies, Prof.
Mahadev, univ. of Mysore, Prof.R.Indira-Director,Center for International Studies,
Prof. H.S.Umesh-noted authority on Theatre, Prof.Lingadevaru Halemane(late)-
Director,Rangayana, Smt Vaidehi-Kannada writer and winner of Central Sahitya
Academy award,Prof.G.K. Govindrao, progressive thinker &actor,
Mr.B.R.Lakshmana Rao, well known Kannada Poet… to name a few, have been
invited as guest speakers and have enjoyed interacting with our students.

Infrastructure and Library:

The dept has spacious and well- furnished class rooms with LCD
projectors, and a computer lab with internet facilities for students. The PG
library has a significant collection of rare & contemporary seminal critical
works (total number: 2500) In fact, scholars from various colleges visit the
library to make use of the important reference works. The students have the
facility to use the INFLIBNET, that is J-GATE E- journal website to which the
college has subscribed. The dept has also submitted a proposal to the govt
to establish a language lab.

Annual Report (2011- 2012)


Action plan for the year 2011-2012:

1) Preparation of academic calendar of events and co-curricular activities


2) Provision of improved infrastructure facilities and A-V teaching aids.
3) Strengthen the library by procuring new and important reference books in the
area of language, literature and criticism.
4) Organize invited lectures , seminars and workshops for the students as part of
the co- curricular activities.
5) Monitor the attendance and discipline of the students and evaluate the
students as per the CBCS rules, on a continuous basis.
6) Involve the students and faculty in research activities, and encourage the
students to practice creative- writing .
Implementation of Action plan 2011- 2012:
a) New LCD projectors, Audio digital recorder, and collar- mike have been
procured, and now the class rooms have adequate seating facilities to
accommodate the increase in students’ strength this year.

b) New books for the library could not be procured as library grants have not
yet been released.
c) Invited lectures, seminars and workshops have been conducted.
d) Students’ attendance, and discipline records have been maintained.
Academic intervention activities and evaluation has been conducted
systematically, as per the CBCS norms.
e) Students have been encouraged to participate in many creative workshops ,
and research projects have been undertaken by the students. The details are
given below.

Calendar of Events for the year 2011-2012 :


1. Admission:
From 2007 till 2011, each year, intake of students was fixed at 20,
approved by the University affiliation committee for admission to the PG dept of
English. This year, the university has approved the intake of students to 25.The
details of admission are given below. The admission process and fees structure
have been implemented as per the guidelines given by the State Govt and the Univ.
of Mysore.

5. Co-curricular activities conducted in the department:

The department has been conducting invited guest lecture programmes,


seminars, workshops etc. for the improvement of academic quality, since the
beginning, that is, 2007. Till now, nearly 30 special lectures have organized. A list

Action plan for the year 2012-2013:


1) Prepare the academic calendar of events for 1st and 3rd semester students
2) To implement the academic programme as per the University guidelines
3) Involve students in more academic and cultural debates by conducting various
seminars, and workshops.
4) Train the students to effectively use the A.V aids, PPT and internet , to develop
technical and soft skills.
5) Conduct creative writing workshops and curriculum based seminars.
6) Give guidance to students to take up competitive exams, such as IAS, NET,
KAS,etc
7) Conduct Seminar at the state level
8) Provide more journals to the students.
