TOPIC – SET THEORY

SET ; A set is a well-defined collection of object.

NOTE ; Some important sign used in set.

≤ Greater than or equal

≥ Smaller than or equal

{1,2,3. . . . } – curly bracket use for listing the object

∈ −𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑛 𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡, ∉ 𝑑𝑜𝑒𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑡𝑜 , 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑎 𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡

R- The set of real number

Z- The set of integer

Z+ -The set of positive number

N -The set of natural numbers

𝜙 − 𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑡𝑦 𝑠𝑒𝑡 , 𝑛𝑢𝑙𝑙 𝑠𝑒𝑡, 𝑣𝑜𝑖𝑑 𝑠𝑒𝑡

Q – Set of rational number

/ - Slash use for set builder method

THERE ARE TWO METHID TO WRITING SET

I. Listing method or roaster method

Ex A= {1,2,3,4,5. . . . . . }
II. Rule method or set builder method
Ex A = {𝑋/ 𝑋 ∈ 𝑁 , }
TYPE OF SET;

Singleton set – set carry a single object ,

Ex-A = {2}

Empty set – set carry no object,

Ex- -A = { }

Finite set –Set carry object is countable,

Ex -A = {1,2,3,4,5,6}

Infinite set- set carry object is uncountable ,

Ex -A = {1,2,3,4,5. . . . . . . . }

Equal set – every element of two set are equal ,

A = {2,3,4,5, } , B = {2,3,4,5} This two set are equal A=B

Subset (⊂) ; if one set complete element present another set this is called subset.

Ex - A = {2,3,4,5,6,7,9,11} , B = {2,3,4,5} , B ⊂ 𝐴

EX2 - A = {1,2,3,4,5,6} , B = {1,2,3,4,5,6} this two set are equal and subset this is written by A⊆ 𝐵

VEN DIAGRAM -Represent

A⊆ 𝐵 Draw by ven daigram A⊆ 𝐵 𝐷𝑟𝑎𝑤 𝑏𝑦 𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚

A A,B

B
UNIVERSAL SET (U)-All the object in under a set is called universal set

Every cicle is a set and rectangular is contain all circle so under rectangular all object is universal
,Rectagular is universal set

COMPLIMENT OF SET ( C , ‘ )

If A is set under universal set exclude A all object in universe is called complement of set

U= {1,2,3,4,5,6}

A = {1,2,3, }

AC == {4,5,6}

Property of complement of set ;

A. No element are common in A and AC

B. A⊆ 𝑈 and AC ⊆ 𝑈
C. Compliment of set u is empty set UC = 𝜙
OPERATION OF SET;
UNION OF SET – If two set are A and B ,all element of set A and set B without repetition is called
union of set. Represent by A U B.
INTERSECTION OF SET – If A and B are two set, all common value between two set is called
intersection of set. Represent by A ∩ B.
PROPERTY OF UNION SET ;
a) A ∩ B.= B ∩ A
b) IF A ∩ B =B Then B ⊆ 𝐴
c) A ∩ AC = 𝜙
d) A ∩ A =A
e) A ∩ 𝜙 = 𝜙
PROPERTY OF UNION OF SET;
a. A U B= B U A
b. A U A =A
c. A U 𝜙 =A
d. A U AC =U
NUMBER OF ELEMENT IN A SET;
