Q1 On the morning of 30th Nov. 1992, in DR 470 16’N 1430 26’E, the sextant altitude of the
Polestar was 460 50.7’ at GMT 20h 56m 26s. If IE was 2.1’ off the arc and HE was 17m, find
the direction of the PL and a position through which it passes.

(LHAƴ=167° 31.1´,OBs Lat=47° 14.9´ N, Az=359.1° PL=089.1°----269.1°)

Q2 In the evening of 23rd Sept 1992, a ship in DR long 1600 12’W, found the sextant altitude of
Polaris to be 360 18.6’ at GMT 05h 21m 08s. If IE was 2.8’ on the arc and HE was 10m, find
the direction of the PL and the latitude where it cuts the DR longitude.

(LHAƴ=282° 23.8´,OBs Lat=36° 27.9´ N, Az=000.9° PL=090.9°----270.9°)

Q3 At GMT 17h 30m 30s on 30th April 1992, in DR longitude 1500E, the observed altitude of
Polaris was 500 46.8’ bearing 0050 (C) HE 14m, var 10E. Find the deviation of the compass,
the direction of the PL and a position through which to draw it.

(LHAƴ=271° 32.0´,OBs Lat=51° 05.5´ N, Az=000.9° PL=090.9°----270.9° TAz=000.9 Err.=4.1 W

Dev=5.1 W)

Q4 On 6th March 1992, at GMT 02h 00m 00s in DR 37’N 000 00’, the Pole star bore 3650 (C). If
variation was 3.70W, find the deviation of the compass.

(LHAƴ=194° 03.6´,OBs Lat=° ´ N, Az=° PL=°----° TAz=359.7°, Err.=3.7° E, Dev.=7.4º E)

Q5 On 13th Sept 1992, PM at ship in DR 370 26’N 720 46’E, the Pole star bore 3500 (C) at GMT
16h 09m 06s. If variation was 100E, find the deviation for the ship’s head.

(LHAƴ=307° 56.5´,OBs Lat=° ´ N, Az=° PL=°----° TAz=001.0°, Err.=11.0° E, Dev.=1.0º E)

Q6 June 1992 during morning twilight in DR 15° 43.6’ N 110° O7.3'W when the GHA Aries was
76° 39.2’ the true altitude of Polaris was 16° 11.3’. Find the direction of the PL and position
through which to draw it.

(LHAƴ=326° 31.9´,OBs Lat=15° 50.9´ N, Az=000.8° PL=090.8°----270.8°)

Q7 Find the position line and position through which it passes in the following case:
DR 28°25'N 027°25'w, the sextant altitude of the POLE STAR was 27°45’, IE 1.0’ off the arc
and HE 16m, month March & GHA Aries 276° 14.4’.
