Biography of Aceh Jaya Figures

Azhar Abdurrahman is the second child of Abdurrahman and Rukiah who was born in
Banda Aceh on April 20,1969, and has seven siblings. Azhar Abdurrahman comes from a well-
off family in keude krueng sabee.His father was a public figure and had served as the head of
the Calang mukim and was well known as a successful businessman. As a child, Azhar
Abdurrahman lived in Banda Aceh in the village of Kampung Baru and then returned with his
grandmother (Halimah) in the hometown of Keude Krueng Sabee.The non-formal education that
Azhar Abdurrahman underwent from his chlhood began with the recitation of the Koran together
with his father at his house with his brothers and sisters, Azhar reciting recitation at night after
the evening call to prayer rang out. The environment where he lives even requires his peers to do
the Koran, if there are children who do not recite the Koran, they will be picked up home by the
recitation teacher.

Azhar received formal education at SD Muhammadiah Banda Aceh only up to grade 1

and continued it again at SD Negeri Krueng Sabee. The formal education that was achieved by
him began in 1975 with the age of 6 years. Approaching the entry of the second grade of
elementary school, Azhar was returned to his hometown to deepen his religious teachings and
formal education. During his elementary school education in hometown, Azhar appeared with
good grades and was active in the learning process, he was able to read fluently in grade 2 SD,
and always got first place. Azhar continued his studies at Calang State Middle School and moved
to Banda Aceh and attended SMA 3 Banda Aceh, then Azhar Abdurrahman continued his
education at Syiah Kuala University with a major in Animal Husbandry at the Faculty of
Agriculture in 1988, and finished his studies with a period of seven years.

Life After Taking Education and Joining the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in the Meurehom
Daya Region.

The life he spent after studying at the University of 164 Syiah Kuala which he completed
in 1995, he still lives at Bang Lah's place and continues his work as a workshop worker. In 1996
he decided to return to his hometown to help with timber sales work and also take care of the
family garden. In 1998, he received an increase in timber sales, due to changing strategies by
providing quality wood at a price that was not too expensive and did not delay goods are
available when ordered, so that many furniture craftsmen in Banda Aceh work with him, because
at that time most of the wood sales will postpone orders within a week, from this led him to the
success of selling wood and earning a very large income.

His joining GAM was supported by the environmental factors where he lived at that time
and the influence of his friends who had previously joined GAM. Azhar Abdurrahman also
explained that from 1998-2000 there was a resident's house in Keude Krueng Sabee, whose
owner was named Darwis, where the house was about 150 meters from the market is a
headquarters in the midst of society because of all forms of GAM activities in the Meureuhom
Daya area, which is commanded by Abu Chaidir, which arranged the struggle strategy. As a
village youth, Azhar certainly saw what the group was doing, and gradually he became interested
so that in 2000 he decided to join the Free Aceh movement and was recruited directly by Abu
Chaidir.

Results of Reconciliation Between GAM and the Government of Indonesia

The peak between GAM and the government occurred in 2005, where the results of the
reconciliation between GAM and the Indonesian government were realized. In a memorandum
of understanding between the government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Free Aceh
Movement in Helsinki Findlandia on August 15, 2005 which provided a great opportunity for
political change in Aceh. This result was used by Azhar Abdurrahman to advance as a Candidate
for Regent of Aceh Jaya on December 11, 2006 with his partner Zamzami Rani who is a former
GAM combatant partner in the Meurehom Daya area, they both advanced in the regional election
through independent channels and won after winning 21,883 votes from their opponent, Zulfian.
Ahmad. Azhar Abdurrahman also admitted that his experience in leading was very minimal
Therefore, the assistance from community leaders, religious leaders, traditional leaders, was very
large, and was added to the assistance of his former GAM friends who had always supported
Azhar Abdurrahman's leadership and were able to advance to lead Aceh Jaya in two periods, the
first 2007-2012 and the second period. 2012-2017. In 2004, the tsunami disaster that devastated
the entire Aceh Jaya region, because most of the population lived in coastal areas. During Azhar
Abdurrahman's leadership, he carried out development with a gradual strategy, in an effort to
restore infrastructure, facilities and infrastructure as well as the economy. Pro-people program

such as shopping malls, education allowances for all students, living allowances for the elderly,
exemption from electricity bills, companion fees for referral patients and subsidies for fertilizers
and agricultural seeds were his superior programs when he served as regent in his first term, so
that in the second election Azhar Abdurrahman promoted back to the program that has been
implemented so that he regained the confidence to serve as regent of Aceh Jaya Regency for the
second time with a term of 2012 to 2017.
CONCLUSION
The success of Azhar Abdurrahman in becoming a development figure in Aceh Jaya
Regency apart from his achievement of his personality was also influenced by the success factor
of his father's leadership as a Calang mukim, so that the leadership spirit he got was inherited by
his father. With the experience that his father went through, who was well acquainted with the
public and at the same time as a community leader,delivered Azhar Abdurrahman's confidence in
taking the leadership milestone as the regent of Aceh Jaya. Azhar Abdurrahman has become a
figure in the development of Aceh Jaya Regency because he has a very large role in the
development of public services and education. As a leader, he contributed to prioritizing these
two problem areas, which at that time had been left behind after the post-Tsunami situation hit.
With his direct role in development that has gradually led to his success in public service and
education, Azhar Abdurrahman won an award as an inspirational leader and National Education
figure at the end of his tenure as Regent of Aceh Jaya Regency.
