BY WILLIAM H. GASS
As some day it may happen that a victim must be found, I've got
a little list - Vve got a little list - of society offenders who might well be
underground, and who never would be missed - who never would be
missed! The Lord High Executioner's list has been compiled "on the off-
chance," in case, because you never can tell. Students of rhetorical forms,
of which the List ought to head the list, call this kind of compilation a
"maybe/maybe." It belongs with the sort of wishes you would make if you
had three, or the number of women you might hope to seduce if you were
rich, handsome, famous, young, unafraid, and the women were still alive
and lonely. Or, if you were Captain Bligh, the books you would choose to
be marooned with, or if you were Mr. Saturday Night, the jokes you would
tell as a stand-up comic, the roles you would play if you were Sir Oliver
Richardson, the renowned thespian. Since most of these "maybes" are
"never, ne vers," it should be clear that some lists are actually counterfactuals,
like day dreams, and require the subjunctive.
However, the Lord High Executioner is dealing in possibilities
which are quite real, if by real we mean "staged." There's the pestilential
nuisances who write for autographs . (The subject/verb agreement of this
entry is terrible and taxes poetic licence to the limit; however the list of
poetic licences is rather a long one.) Ko-Ko' s collection is also of the kind
popularly called "a shit list," or variously "a hit list," "the list of Adrian
Messenger," "the ten most- wanted," and so on . Schindler' s list is not a shit
list, but its contrary, a shinola list. Otherwise, the form is the same.
Worth a Detour to Avoid, daggered from one to four like the rosettes, and
certainly changeable, since the number of daggers Atlantic City may
deserve will doubtless change from time to time.
Normally lists are the purposeful coming together of names like
starlings to their evening trees. They tend to confer equality on their
members, also like starlings in their evening trees. The list of the ten
wonders of the world does not imply that the wonder given as #1 (at the
front or the top) is #1 . The thousand and three ladies on Don Giovanni's
were each equally enjoyed, the list presumes, all equally loved. The first
illusory, so are most comforts. The top six... (why be a slave to the five and
dime?)... the top six illusory comforts are: a Sports Car, a Winning Team,
Confession, a Savings Account, a Marriage Licence, a White Collar Job,
a Ranch House in the Suburbs.

you if you had rat poison on your shopping list the day before your wife's
fatal illness, and you are not allowed to reply: "no sir, because I crossed that
item off after I bought some."
Normally, an act or object finagles its way onto a list simply by

Some lists list. Other lists list examples of what they wish
to list. Suppose, on the surface of my shopping list, there is a spot of
cooking oil, a smear of jam, some bacon grease. This set of "finger prints"
is not a real list, but an inadvertant demonstration of what might be named
on the real list. Foucault points out that on Borges' list only the names can
be brought together, never their referents; but he fails to observe that in fact
these categories belong together because by not belonging together they
reveal another set of things (illogicalities) which do.

The garb of a ghost merges with a list of things in the allegedly real world
only to slip into another of things in a painted one, and these lists lead to
a list of the painted world's qualities, and then to one which characterizes
its artist as a frequent visitor to the spa, before concluding (in my selection)
with a list of the pleasures of escape to be had if one accepts the embrace
of the hotel, its grounds, and its steamy springs.
